Mescherin is located directly on the Polish border. The West Oder and the bridge to Gryfino provide a concrete geographical context for this location; from the observation tower, the view extends across the Staffelde Polder. There are also archaeological traces from several periods, as well as cycling and hiking trails that serve different purposes. The border region, landscape, outdoor activities, and history therefore offer several possible focal points for a stay.

Border Location and Orientation

The West Oder separates the Uckermark from Gryfino. The Mescherin Bridge connects the town with Gryfino on the Polish side of the Oder. The river and the bridge describe the border location from two perspectives: the river marks the divide, while the bridge provides a connection. This distinction is useful for finding your bearings in Mescherin, as it makes the town’s geographical setting clear.

Staffelde Polder and Views

An observation tower stands at the edge of the town, its shape reminiscent of a crane. From there, the view extends across the Staffelde Polder. The tower can be reached on foot from the L113; by car, take the A11 and the Penkun exit. Road information and journey times may change, so it is advisable to check your route before setting off.

The Staffelde Zone I protected area covers around 27 hectares within the municipality of Mescherin. In one part of the Staffelde Polder, wilderness was able to develop undisturbed for over 20 years. The landscape can therefore be described in terms of both the protected area’s size and the period of undisturbed development.

Cycling and Hiking Trails

The Oder–Neisse Cycle Route crosses the entire length of Mescherin. By contrast, the 217-kilometer Märkischer Landweg starts or ends here. These routes serve different purposes in trip planning: Mescherin lies along the cycle route’s through-route, while it is the starting or ending point of the Märkischer Landweg. The hiking trail reaches Mescherin via a sunken lane along the steep bank of the West Oder, passing the Bollwerk.

A strenuous climb leads to Stettiner Berg, which lies above the village. There is a bus stop at the hikers’ car park, with connections towards Tantow railway station and via Gartz to Schwedt/Oder. As transport connections may change, it is best to check them before your trip.

Archaeological Traces and Historic Monument

The edition of the Brandenburg archaeological register dated January 1, 2025, lists Mescherin contexts from the Bronze Age, Neolithic, Slavic Middle Ages, Roman Imperial period, and Iron Age. It also identifies a registered archaeological site with remains of the medieval and modern village center, church remains, a Slavic medieval settlement, a modern cemetery, and prehistoric settlement traces. The periods listed span several clearly distinct historical eras.

The excerpt from Brandenburg’s state monument register dated January 1, 2025, lists the church at Obere Dorfstraße 39 as a protected monument. The town’s historical profile thus brings archaeological traces and a protected historic building together.
