Mittenwalde combines the character of a typical street village with the history of an estate complex and paths by Fauler See. There are several different options when planning a visit: explore the village’s preserved layout, take a walk around the water or follow a signposted trail through the forest. In the village district of Blankensee, visitors can also find a goat farm and the Gut Blankensee oil mill, which offers farm activities and accommodation.
A Street Village with an Estate History
Mittenwalde is in the Uckermark district of Brandenburg. The village is considered a typical street village and developed from an estate complex. This included a manor house with a park and several farm buildings; day labourers’ cottages have been preserved along the village street. The term “street village” draws attention to the settlement’s layout: the manor house, park and farm buildings represent the estate, while the cottages reflect another aspect of the village’s history.
Fauler See: Nature and Trails
Fauler See is a local recreational area. It was formed through glacial processes, which also created the moraine landscapes of the North German Plain. The lake and its banks provide habitats for rare animal and plant species. A circular hiking route follows the shore of Fauler See, while a signposted hiking trail runs through the adjacent Tangerwald forest to Teufelsstein. This offers two different kinds of walks to choose from: a loop by the water or a forest route with a named destination. Fishing is another recreational activity at Fauler See; check the local rules before fishing.
Blankensee: Cheese, Farm and Accommodation
The village district of Blankensee is home to the ma petite chèvre goat farm. Its range includes unflavoured goat’s cheese, varieties with pepper or plant ash, and a seasonal version wrapped in vine leaves. The selection may change, so ask what is currently available before visiting. The Gut Blankensee oil mill offers a traditional farm setting where guests can spend time beneath apple trees. Visitor facilities also include a function room, meals prepared in its own kitchen or by a caterer, and a bar. The offer may change; check the current options before making specific event plans. The oil mill also offers family accommodation with up to twelve beds in six rooms. Capacity may change too, so check before booking.
The Wider Uckermark Region
The Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park, in the wider travel destination of Uckermark, lies in a gently rolling landscape rich in water. Its features include clear-water lakes, kettle holes and marshes; the nature park has more than 150 kilometres of canoeing routes and over 600 kilometres of signposted hiking trails. The Uckermark as a whole also has more than 500 lakes, as well as thousands of smaller ponds, kettle holes, marshes, streams and rivers. The Gramzow Railway Museum offers another regional perspective: it displays historic railway vehicles from different periods, along with exhibitions on track construction, railway workshops, and railway operations and traffic services. On operating days, visitors can ride on historic railway vehicles and drive handcars themselves.
