A town tour, the Stettin Gate and cultural venues with ties to different periods give a stay in Gartz (Oder) a historical focus. At the same time, you can plan your visit from different perspectives: focusing on the town’s history, cultural events or cycling. The options offer different points of interest and leave you free to choose the focus of your trip.

Discover Gartz on a town tour

A town tour is available in Gartz (Oder) and takes you through the town’s history: from its Slavic beginnings and medieval heyday to the Brandenburg-Prussian period and its present-day status as a border town. A fold-out town map and QR codes on the information boards at the sights make it easier to find your way. This lets you plan the tour around historical landmarks rather than treating the town merely as a backdrop for a single stop.

If you are particularly interested in older architecture, you can focus on the Stettin Gate. Built from fieldstones in the 13th century, it is the only one of Gartz’s four gates to have survived. Construction of St. Stephen’s Church also dates back to the 13th century. Together, these two facts point to different historical aspects of the town; they do not refer to the same building or the same history.

Museum and cultural venues

The Gartz (Oder) Ackerbürger Museum is housed in the former gatekeeper’s house and the adjoining half-timbered building at the Stettin Gate. Its exhibition explores life in the town of smallholding citizens in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum thus complements the medieval gate with insights into a later period. For current opening hours, it is advisable to call before your visit.

Other venues represent different forms of cultural life. The Holy Spirit Hospital, also known as the Spittel, is now used by the local heritage association for exhibitions and concerts. After extensive restoration work, the Cannon Shed was handed over in 1995 as a public cultural venue for the town and its visitors. Concerts and open-air events are held at St. Stephen’s Church during the summer months. If you visit in summer, you can make these seasonal events a focus of your trip; check specific dates in advance.

Seasonal events and cycling

The Crane Days are a recurring event on the calendar. They are held each year in Gartz (Oder) and Mescherin in late September and/or early October, with a programme devoted to cranes. This approximate seasonal timing can help with trip planning; if you are travelling specifically for the Crane Days, check the dates and programme for your travel period.

The Oder–Neisse Cycle Route passes through Gartz (Oder) and Mescherin on its way towards the Baltic Sea. This gives you another way to experience the area alongside a town tour: you can make the cycle route the focus of your trip, while the tour centres on the town’s history. The two options appeal to different interests and do not need to be combined into a set itinerary.

When deciding when to visit Gartz, the recurring Crane Days in late September and/or early October and the events at St. Stephen’s Church during the summer months offer two clearly distinct seasonal points of reference. If you are more interested in historical landmarks, you can focus on the town tour, the Stettin Gate and the Ackerbürger Museum. This lets you plan your stay around your own interests without assuming a schedule that has not been confirmed.
