For a trip to Uckerland, local history and nature can be considered as two main themes. In Wolfshagen, there is a hiking trail by Haussee, historic buildings and a park with a distinctive design history. Other places add village churches, protected landscapes and a cycle route to the picture.

Hiking Trails, Cycle Route and Lakes

A two-kilometre hiking trail runs around Haussee in Wolfshagen and is mostly surrounded by woodland. This makes it a clearly defined hiking destination. For cyclists, the route of the Berlin–Usedom Cycle Route is a separate point of interest: it passes through the villages in the Trebenow district.

The landscape in the area around the destination also offers different settings for walking and cycling tours. Shaped by the Wilsickow “Os” (elongated hills), the landscape is framed by fields and forests and invites visitors to enjoy longer hikes and cycling tours. Near Trebenow lies the Köhntoptal, a nature reserve with dry grassland slopes where various protected plants grow. The Birkenbruch, a natural wetland designated as a protected landscape feature, lies west of Milow.

Water is also part of the Uckerland selection, though with different features: the Großer Lübbenower See and Kleiner Lübbenower See are protected landscape features and breeding grounds for numerous waterbirds. The Großer Lübbenower See is a popular place to swim in summer. This seasonal invitation differs from the lakes’ year-round protected status and natural environment.

Buildings and Park History

Wolfshagen brings together several notable landmarks of local history. Blankenburg Castle stood on the west bank of Haussee in the Middle Ages; a few fieldstone remains have survived. The 24-metre-high keep was restored in 1999. The 60-metre-long tiled bridge is another historic link to Haussee. It was built in the 1830s as an arched bridge from fieldstones and bricks, and was completely restored between 1995 and 1996.

The King’s Column, built in 1834, stands in the centre of the village and is about 17 metres high. The 3.1-hectare Wolfshagen Park was created near the castle gardens in the 17th century in the French style. In the early 19th century, Peter-Josef Lenné redesigned it as an English-style landscape garden. This development illustrates how park design changed over the course of different eras.

The churches also showcase different architectural styles. The church in Wolfshagen is an elaborate Neo-Gothic stucco building with an irregular floor plan; it was built between 1850 and 1858. The village church in Hetzdorf is an early Gothic fieldstone building. Its richly decorated, three-tiered altar features narrative reliefs depicting biblical stories and dates from 1620. In Schlepkow, the church is made of fieldstone and has a half-timbered tower dating from the 18th century.

In Wismar, the medieval fieldstone church is surrounded by a substantial defensive wall. It also has a historically valuable organ in the Neoclassical style. Lemmersdorf Park offers a different focus: an avenue of horse chestnuts leads into it, and the park features a variety of tree species. For visitors choosing cultural highlights, there are churches with distinctive architecture and furnishings, as well as parkland and individual historic buildings.

Season and Trip Planning

Two of Uckerland’s themes have a particularly specific seasonal connection: summer is the time for swimming at the Großer Lübbenower See, while the annual Rose Festival in Wolfshagen was first held in 1858. These details offer different points of reference for planning a trip without specifying a particular event date.

If you are looking for a hotel in Uckerland, you can choose where to stay based on your interests: Wolfshagen offers a hiking trail, park history and several historic buildings; for cycling trips, the route through the villages in the Trebenow district is relevant. The churches in Hetzdorf, Wismar and Schlepkow, meanwhile, differ in their architectural form and furnishings.
