Discover Templin through its medieval walls and gates: the fieldstone wall encloses the medieval town center, and an archaeological trail leads to historic sites and finds. A small bathing area by the town lake and a year-round cultural program add further highlights. You can tailor your stay around local history, walks or culture.
Walls, gates and architectural history
Templin’s medieval fieldstone wall is 1,735 meters long and up to seven meters high. It encloses the town center. The fortifications include three Gothic brick gates, two towers and 47 Wiek houses. Prenzlauer Tor is Templin’s newest and most complete brick gate. A museum in the historic gate presents more than 750 years of Templin’s town history.
Different eras are also evident in individual buildings. The small St. George’s Chapel dates from the 14th century and was built in the Brick Gothic style. Its 16th-century wooden sculpture depicts the patron saint George on horseback, in full armor and fighting the dragon. Rühlstraße is lined with lovingly restored half-timbered houses from around 1740, forming a continuous block frontage. St. Mary Magdalene Church, meanwhile, was rebuilt in the Baroque style on the foundations of its Gothic predecessor after the 1735 fire. Together, these architectural styles tell the story of different periods in Templin’s history.
Walking trails and time by the water
You can stroll along Templin’s restored fortifications. The Archaeological Town Trail offers a different perspective: it leads through the historic old town, passing Market Square and Church Square, among other places, as well as the town wall. Ten information panels provide background on the finds at each location. The trail focuses on archaeological exploration, while a walk along the fortifications lets you experience the historic ring of walls.
If you’d like to hear interesting facts and anecdotes about the town, consider joining one of the town walks offered on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Check the dates before your trip. For a break by the water, there is a small bathing area on the shore of Templin’s town lake, right by the lakeside path below the Weinberg.
