Schönfeld combines a massive 13th-century fieldstone church with a settlement history dating back to around 1200. Alongside the church and local history, walks through meadows and fields offer a different focus. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Schönfeld, you can decide whether architectural history, historical development, or outdoor activities should shape your stay.

Schönfeld Church and its architectural design

Schönfeld Church is a massive fieldstone building dating from the 13th century. Its stepped design consists of a broad west tower, a narrower nave, a set-back choir, and an apse. During the complete renovation of the interior, remnants of frescoes came to light in the altar area; some were uncovered. The church was rededicated during a service on September 27, 1992. In churches, the nave is the main space; the choir adjoins it, and the apse forms the end.

Local history across several periods

The settlement’s history dates back to the colonization period around 1200. The 1375 land register mentions freehold estates held by Lüdicke von der Berge and Kuno Schwanebeke. Records from 1541 and 1608 link the village, two manor houses, fishing, and fields with the Berg family. By the end of the Thirty Years’ War, a large part of Schönfeld was deserted and devastated. Carl Büchsel was born in Schönfeld in 1803.

Walks, swimming pool, and megalithic tomb

Walks through meadows and fields are considered worthwhile in every season. One possible route leads to an elk and reindeer farm near Kleptow. The Klockow swimming pool in the municipality of Schönfeld has separate areas for swimmers and non-swimmers, a three-meter diving tower, sunbathing lawns, and a separate paddling pool. As facilities may change, check the current details before visiting. The megalithic tomb lies below Galgenberg; the area there is designated a natural monument. Check the local protection status before visiting.

Bus connection

Bus route 474 connects Schönfeld Mitte with Gartz and runs via Hohenreinkendorf and Tantow. Check the current timetable before travelling, as routes and times may change.
