Craftsmanship and World Heritage in Seiffen
An original Preißler lathe powered by water forms the centerpiece of the Erzgebirgisches Freilichtmuseum Seiffen open-air museum in the spa town of Seiffen. The museum showcases historic buildings and workshops from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Seiffen is considered the birthplace of Erzgebirge folk art; the lathe and workshops make this cultural focus tangible in a specific place.
Beyond this particular town, traditional crafts such as ring turning and wood shaving carving are still passed down from generation to generation throughout the Ore Mountains. These offer different perspectives: the open-air museum presents historic workplaces, while the skills passed down highlight the continuing craft tradition across the wider region.
The broader cultural setting is the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. A regional dining tradition is also part of the picture: restaurants in the Ore Mountains serve Neunerlei, a tradition of nine different dishes said to bring good luck and blessings for the coming year. Craftsmanship, mining culture and traditional customs therefore offer different perspectives on the Ore Mountains.
From a network of trails to a single circular route
The Erzgebirgskreis has a signposted network of around 4,500 kilometres of hiking trails. Panoramic trails around the mining towns of Schneeberg, Schwarzenberg and Zwönitz offer views of their historic town centres. The choice thus ranges from an extensive regional trail network to paths where the townscape itself is part of the experience.
If you’re looking for a specific circular route with a stated distance and duration, the Schwarzenberg Panorama Trail is one option: the circular hike is 13.8 kilometres long, follows the heights around Schwarzenberg and takes about 4 hours and 5 minutes. Another striking landscape feature is Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal. At 1,215 metres, it is the highest mountain in Saxony.
Long-distance trails cover a wider regional area. The 285-kilometre Kammweg Erzgebirge-Vogtland offers hikes from May to October through forests, flower-filled mountain meadows and idyllic stream valleys, as well as far-reaching views. In the wider Ore Mountains region, the approximately 130-kilometre Zschopautalweg is a route for active outings and hikes based in one location. The two trails differ in their stated lengths; for the Kammweg, the May-to-October season is also specified.
Nearby, a section of the Stoneman Miriquidi runs from Auersberg to Blatenský vrch (Plattenberg). It covers 21 kilometres with 450 metres of elevation gain, passing the Kleiner Kranichsee nature reserve and continuing towards Johanngeorgenstadt. Alongside the hiking trails in the district, there are also route sections nearby with clearly identifiable landscape features.
