Bad Schlema offers several different discoveries: pools with radon and brine, an underground visitor experience on foot, trails connected with mining, and baked goods from a historic clay oven. For your trip planning, the town can be explored through three main themes: the water world, outdoor activities and baking traditions.
Water World and Getting Around
The water world features pools with radon and brine and water temperatures of up to 35 °C. The bathing area is entirely on one level. Elevators allow people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users to move between floors at several points. This information can help you plan the bathing area and changes between floors separately. Operating details may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
Spa Park and Trails
A municipal notice dated 15 July 2026 stated that, from that date, large parts of the spa park were closed due to preparations for the 2027 State Garden Show; a shorter walking route remained accessible. At the same time, the 94-kilometre network of hiking and terrain therapy trails around Bad Schlema and Silberberg remained fully accessible. If you plan to visit the spa park, check access for your travel dates in advance.
Underground Visit or Circular Hiking Trail
The educational mine offers an underground visitor experience on foot, covering a total of 1,300 metres. The Mining and Remediation Educational Trail, by contrast, is an approximately ten-kilometre circular hiking trail that starts and ends at Kulturhaus Aktivist. The two options therefore differ in both length and format: an underground route versus a longer loop with a fixed start and end point. When choosing, you can take both the route length and the type of trail into account. At approximately ten kilometres, the loop is just under eight times as long as the educational mine’s 1,300 metres.
Hiking and Cycling in Aue-Bad Schlema
The hiking and cycling options in Aue-Bad Schlema include the Muldental Cycle Path, the Floßgraben, Bärengrund and Schwarzwasser hiking routes, as well as circular walks and mountain hiking routes on the wooded slopes of the Auer valley. The selection thus includes one named cycling route and several types of hiking route. You can use the names as a guide when looking for a cycling trip, a hike, or a circular or mountain hike.
Bakehouse and Live Baking Demonstrations
The bakehouse in Bad Schlema offers visitors fresh bread and cakes prepared in a historic clay oven. The demonstration bakery makes wood-fired bread and traybakes. The Backhaus Schlema e.V. association also holds various live baking events. The baked goods and the baking demonstrations are therefore distinct aspects of the bakehouse. Check specific event dates in advance for your travel dates.
