Dorfchemnitz: Cultural History, Wood Art and Landscape

Dorfchemnitz offers several themes to consider when planning your trip: the architectural history of the village church, wood art at the Blockhausen exhibition and sweeping views across the Erzgebirge. Blockhausen is known as a forest and wood experience center associated with Dorfchemnitz; the church, in turn, tells the story of several phases of construction and change. You can therefore explore cultural history, art and landscape as distinct areas of interest.

Valley Views and Trails

Dorfchemnitz lies in a valley flanked by elevations reaching about 650 meters. Sweeping views extend across the Erzgebirge. The signposted network of cycling and hiking trails, as well as a network of bridle trails, offer different ways to get active: cycling, hiking or riding. Plan your trip according to which of these activities you would like to include.

The Dorfchemnitz Church: Several Building Phases

The first records of the Dorfchemnitz church date from around 1550, during the Reformation. The approximately 40-meter-high tower took on its present form in 1705. The church’s present form dates from 1802 to 1804. The organ was built in 1803 by Johann Christian Kaiser and moved to the gallery in 1834 by Karl Gottlieb Jehmlich. The tower’s design, the church’s form and the organ’s history thus belong to different periods; no single year captures the full story.

Blockhausen: Sculptures, Forest and Events

The Blockhausen exhibition features wooden sculptures created by chainsaw artists from around the world. It also showcases the world’s longest table. Blockhausen is set in a mixed forest of beech, maple, Douglas fir and silver fir, and is a destination for forestry excursions. Its program includes cultural events such as cabaret and historic tractor gatherings, as well as chainsaw carving courses for beginners and advanced participants. The events program may change, so check the dates before your trip.

The History of Technology and Iron Mining

The Technical Museum Eisenhammer is a historic, water-powered hammer mill associated with iron mining in the Erzgebirge. Its grounds also include a local history room and a chair factory with original machinery. The subject therefore extends beyond the hammer mill alone: the local history room and the preserved machinery are also part of this perspective on history and technology.

Getting to Blockhausen and Parking

The route to Blockhausen is signposted from the B 101 and B 171. Free parking is available on TalstraĂźe between Mulda and Dorfchemnitz. Check the parking rules before setting out. Signage and access details may change.

Mittelsachsen as the Wider Travel Area

In the wider travel destination of Mittelsachsen, the Mulderadweg crosses the district. The 353-meter-high Rochlitzer Berg is a remnant of volcanic activity; its red porphyry tuff is described as unique in Germany and Europe. In Freiberg, the terra mineralia exhibition at Freudenstein Castle presents more than 3,500 minerals, gemstones and meteorites. These examples broaden the view to the wider travel destination, while Dorfchemnitz has its own highlights in its church, trails and Blockhausen.
