Schlettau Castle brings together architectural history, collections and cultural events; it is also the starting and finishing point of the 15.53-kilometre “Around Schlettau” circular hike. This gives you two distinct focal points for planning: the castle’s cultural history and a tour with several named trail sections.
Schlettau Castle: Architectural History and Exhibitions
The listed castle complex dates back to the 14th century and includes a manor house, farm buildings and a landscaped park. Architectural elements from the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Gothic periods come together at the site. The complex therefore cannot be reduced to a single style: several building periods shape its architecture.
A permanent exhibition on the castle’s history is part of the offer. Schlettau Castle also houses the Gallery of Ore Mountains Landscape Art, a centre for forest and wildlife history, and a passementerie demonstration workshop. The different facilities each offer their own thematic focus—from the castle’s history and landscape art to passementerie making. Readings, theatre performances and concerts take place in the Knights’ Hall; the programme may vary. If you would like to attend an event, check the dates before your trip.
Craftsmanship and Other Cultural Traces
Near the castle, the “Glück auf” carving centre showcases traditional woodcarving and bobbin lace-making. The works on display include mechanical Christmas displays, historic pyramids and carvings by its members. Together with the passementerie demonstration workshop, it offers a look at different forms of Ore Mountain craftsmanship without reducing them to the same technique.
The Gothic St. Ulrich’s Church is associated with the locally named “church face.” Visits are possible by arrangement. If you are interested in including the church in your cultural itinerary, access by prior arrangement is an important point to consider.
Circular Hike and Getting There
The 15.53-kilometre “Around Schlettau” circular hike starts and ends at the castle. Its route follows the Zschopau Valley Trail, a forest route towards Scheibenberg, a basalt nature trail and the Ottomar-Zahm Trail; along the way, there are views of the Ore Mountains.
Options for getting to the hike include the castle car park/Naumannplatz and a bus connection. Check bus services before setting off. Trail conditions can also change, so it is worth checking for current information before you start.
More Cultural and Hiking Highlights in the Erzgebirgskreis
The wider destination of Erzgebirgskreis provides a broader context for exploring culture and hiking. The signposted hiking trail network in the Erzgebirgskreis covers around 4,500 kilometres. The Ore Mountain Mining Region (Montanregion Erzgebirge/KrušnohoĹ™Ă) has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019.
Seiffen is considered the cradle of Ore Mountain folk art. In the spa town of Seiffen, the Ore Mountains Open-Air Museum presents historic buildings and workshops from the 19th and early 20th centuries. At its centre is the original, well-preserved Preißler turning workshop, powered by water. These examples offer a distinct insight into the culture of the Erzgebirgskreis, separate from Schlettau’s castle and craft themes.
The Erzgebirgskreis also offers other named hiking routes. The Schwarzenberg Panorama Trail is a 13.8-kilometre circular hike along the heights around Schwarzenberg; it takes about 4 hours and 5 minutes. Panorama trails around the mining towns of Schneeberg, Schwarzenberg and Zwönitz offer views of their historic town centres. Fichtelberg, near Oberwiesenthal, is 1,215 metres high and the highest mountain in Saxony.
When looking for a hotel in Schlettau, consider whether the castle and its cultural offerings, Ore Mountain craftsmanship or the circular hike will be the main focus of your stay. This lets you plan your accommodation around the experiences you want to prioritise locally.
