Hiking trails lead from Tannenberg into the Lohenbachtal valley, while historic buildings offer insights into the town’s history. This means that nature and culture are available as distinct focuses when planning a trip. Tannenberg is connected to the B 95 via the S 260 and lies on the Eisenach–Budapest long-distance hiking trail and the Silver Road holiday route.
Hiking Trails and Nature in the Lohenbachtal Valley
Behind the Tannenberg natural swimming pool, a well-maintained hiking trail leads into the Lohenbachtal valley. There, you’ll find a Kneipp footbath and a shelter with a table and benches. Wild orchids and arnica grow in the nature reserve’s nutrient-poor meadows. Signposts in the Lohenbachtal valley point toward the Buttersteig trail and the Kleiner Fuchsstein viewpoint.
For planning a longer route, consider the Zschopautalweg trail: one of its stages runs for 8 kilometers from Tannenberg to Thermalbad Wiesenbad. This distance refers to the stage, not the trails in the Lohenbachtal valley. The town also lies on the Eisenach–Budapest long-distance hiking trail and the Silver Road; both are distinct from the specific Zschopautalweg stage described here.
The townscape also offers a glimpse into the history of the landscape. The Waldhufen field-strip pattern is still visible on Tannenberg’s southern side. Hedgerows and field margins integrate the settlement into the landscape. The Erzgebirgskreis also has a signposted hiking trail network of about 4,500 kilometers—a regional reference, not a description of a single trail in Tannenberg.
Local History and Erzgebirge Cultural Heritage
St. Christopher’s Church contains several historic features: a carved altar from 1521, attributed to the school of Christoph Walther; a sandstone baptismal font from the 16th century; historic children’s gravestones; and a sandstone relief epitaph from 1592.
The Hutzenhäusel was originally a miner’s home, built in the styles of the 16th and 17th centuries, and is a listed monument. Distinctive architectural features were retained after its reconstruction. The house has a common room for about 30 people, an accurately reconstructed wooden staircase, and a working traditional Erzgebirge kitchen stove. The outdoor area offers space to relax and barbecue. As individual facilities may change, it is advisable to check their current status before visiting.
The Paßklause Tower was part of an old moated castle, whose origins may date back to the 12th century. It is considered one of the best-preserved monuments of its kind in the Erzgebirge. A café and rooms used by local historians are located at the former manor; individual uses may change. Another cultural stop is Tannenberg’s village pyramid: designed as a miner’s hut, it depicts a traditional Erzgebirge room, a miner, a hunter, and a forest dweller.
More Information for Planning Your Trip
The Tannenberg natural swimming pool has about 10,000 square meters of sunbathing lawn and around 3,000 square meters of water; there is also a volleyball court and a playground. Check seasonal opening hours before visiting. Alongside the hiking trails and historic sites, this offers further potential interests for a trip.
For those wishing to explore beyond Tannenberg: in the wider destination of Erzgebirgskreis, the Erzgebirge/Krušnohořà Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. This regional connection complements Tannenberg’s local history without equating it with the entire mining region.
When looking for accommodation, you can choose to focus your trip on the Lohenbachtal valley, the natural swimming pool, or local history.
