Großolbersdorf combines the story of Karl Stülpner with trails through the low mountain landscape. For a cultural perspective, the historic Karl Stülpner Circular Trail offers a particularly tangible experience: it passes through the village and by several places associated with Stülpner. If you prefer to plan a designated route, you can choose between the hiking and cycling loops.

Karl Stülpner and the Village’s History

The Sättlerhaus is a listed building. It features a knitting room dating from the mid-19th century, a Christmas room, a goat stable and an outhouse. The house is open on Saturdays and Sundays from April to October; guided tours outside opening hours can be arranged by appointment. Check visiting times before you set off.

The collection ranges from the knitting room and Christmas room to the stable and outhouse. Together, these offer a variety of glimpses into historic living and working spaces.

At Stülpnerberg, 100 carved figures in 27 scenes depict the life and work of Karl Stülpner. He is buried in the Großolbersdorf cemetery. Marked in white-green-white, the Karl Stülpner Circular Trail runs from Scharfenstein through Großolbersdorf and back again. In Großolbersdorf, the route passes the Sättlerhaus and Stülpner’s grave; it also goes by the Schnitzerheim, with Stülpnerberg, on Warmbadstraße.

Hiking in the Upper Zschopau Valley

Großolbersdorf is connected with the protected Upper Zschopau Valley landscape area, which invites visitors to hike and explore. The Großolbersdorf hiking loop is 12.27 kilometres long and rated difficult. It starts and ends at the town hall car park in Großolbersdorf; along the way, it offers views across the low mountain landscape. Trail markings include white-yellow-white, white-red-white and white-green-white. Check the route information before setting out.

Cycling Loop and Getting There

The Mountains and Forests cycling loop is 24.13 kilometres long, rated moderate and has a low fitness requirement. It runs mostly through wooded terrain. The Drei-Brüder-Höhe viewpoint is on the route outside the town centre; from there, panoramic views extend towards the ridge heights. By comparison, the hiking loop is shorter but rated difficult, while the longer cycling loop is rated moderate and has a low fitness requirement.

Bus route 233 connects Zschopau with Großolbersdorf. The Scharfenstein railway station, 3 kilometres away, is listed as a bus and train access point for the cycling loop. Check timetables and connections before travelling or starting your tour.
