Stollberg combines distinctive churches, cultural venues and circular routes of varying lengths. When planning your trip, you can choose between city history, theatre and educational activities, or paths through green spaces. These interests can be explored as separate themes: the churches and historic townscape offer different discoveries from a cycling route or the longer Green Trail.
Churches, city history and remembrance
St. Mary’s Church, also known as the Church of St. Mary, Beatae Virginis Mariae and colloquially as the “Church of the Dead”, is Stollberg’s oldest building. It is a historic architectural monument in the Romanesque style. A distinctive feature is the painting on its ceiling and vault ribs: it was uncovered during renovation work and is considered unique of its kind in Saxony.
St. James’ Church, also known as Stollberg Market Church or Jakobikirche, plays a different role in the townscape. It is the market church dedicated to the Apostle James; its imposing tower has watched over the market square for centuries. Together, the two churches offer insight into different aspects of Stollberg’s history: St. Mary’s Church is notable for its great age and Romanesque architecture, while St. James’ stands out for its dedication and connection to the market square.
Another historical landmark is the permanent exhibition at the Stalburc site. Since 2024, it has commemorated women who were persecuted for political reasons and imprisoned in Hoheneck, and is dedicated to the Hoheneck Women’s Prison Memorial. To explore the old town, there is a historical walking tour and guided town tours. A 360° tour also offers the opportunity to explore Stollberg remotely.
Culture, theatre and discovery
Bürgergarten in the centre of Stollberg is a cultural centre in the Arts and Crafts Jugendstil style. Its stated uses include concerts, shows, trade fairs, conferences and exhibitions, as well as company presentations and wedding celebrations. The venue is therefore associated with a broad range of cultural and event formats.
At Theater Burattino, theatre enthusiasts aged 6 to 99 can take part in theatre activities in their free time. It also offers children and young people training in aesthetic education. Phänomenia focuses on discovery and exploration: exciting, interactive experiences enrich the learning process there. These activities offer different ways to engage with culture and knowledge, from performing theatre themselves to learning through exploration.
Cycling route and Green Trail
The Stollberg Reservoir Cycling Route is a short, moderately difficult circular route of 10.6 kilometres. It is mostly paved, starts in the town centre and passes the Querenbach Reservoir through Bürgerwald. From Goldene Höhe, the route returns to town with scenic views. Its stated distance makes it the shorter of the two routes described here.
The Stollberg Green Trail is a circular route of more than 20 kilometres. As part of an award-winning simul+ Kreativ project, by summer 2026 it had been equipped with numerous habitats for wild insects, benches, information boards and an energy-self-sufficient bicycle charging station. The route passes several municipal parks, orchard meadows and bodies of water. It also passes the Phänomenia learning and discovery centre and the environmental education centre of the Stollberg Beekeepers’ Association in Mitteldorf. The Green Trail thus differs from the cycling route not only in length, but also in the green spaces and learning venues along the way.
Planning your stay
At the Kulturbahnhof, visitors can get information about places to visit, accommodation, hiking and cycling options, and events in Stollberg and the surrounding area. This can help you plan your trip around culture, outdoor activities or events. When choosing between the routes described, their specific distances and stops are particularly useful; if you are more interested in the town’s history, the churches, walking tour and guided town tours offer distinct themes to explore.
