Schneeberg combines an extensive hiking loop with a specific chapter of mining history. The Panorama hiking trail starts and ends at the town hall and passes several named stops; the Siebenschlehener Pochwerk Technical Museum is dedicated to processing cobalt ore and producing cobalt blue. This brings together two distinct highlights: a circular hike with a clearly defined route and a preserved technical monument.
Hiking in Schneeberg: the Panorama Trail
The Schneeberg Panorama hiking trail is a circular route about 18.77 kilometers long, starting and ending at the town hall. Along the way, it passes St. Wolfgang's Church, Gleesberg, TĂĽrkschacht, Filzteich and Keilberg before returning to the town center. Having the same starting and ending point makes the loop easy to plan; the route length gives the hike a clear scope.
The Schneeberg/Markt stop is on the route and is served by bus lines 359, 360 and 362. As bus routes and schedules may change, check the timetable before you travel. The stop can be planned as a starting point for the loop.
Mining history at the Siebenschlehener Pochwerk
The Siebenschlehener Pochwerk Technical Museum focuses on processing cobalt ore and producing cobalt blue. The museum explores these subjects in a preserved mining monument; its current exhibition brings together the material and the history of its production. While the Schneeberg Panorama Trail takes hikers along a route with named stops, the Pochwerk highlights the technical side of the mining heritage. The two highlights are therefore clearly distinct: one is a circular hike, the other the history of a production process.
Hiking and cultural highlights in the Erzgebirgskreis district
Across the wider Erzgebirgskreis destination, the signposted hiking trail network covers around 4,500 kilometers. Another specific circular hike is the Schwarzenberg Panorama Trail: it follows the heights around Schwarzenberg, is 13.8 kilometers long and takes about 4 hours and 5 minutes. The Schneeberg loop is longer by comparison; the time of about 4 hours and 5 minutes applies to the hike near Schwarzenberg. Panorama trails around the mining towns of Schneeberg, Schwarzenberg and Zwönitz also offer views of their historic town centers.
The Erzgebirgskreis also offers a wealth of cultural topics. The Erzgebirge/Krušnohořà Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. Seiffen is considered the birthplace of Erzgebirge folk art. The Seiffen Open-Air Museum showcases historic buildings and workshops from the 19th and early 20th centuries. At the heart of the museum in the spa town of Seiffen is the original, preserved Preißler turning workshop, powered by water.
The Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal is another regional landmark: at 1,215 meters, it is Saxony's highest mountain.
