In Mildenau, you can explore the landscape, enjoy outdoor activities, and discover local history from different perspectives. A forest-hufendorf village on the mountain slopes, trails through fields, and traces of historic mining give the town several points of interest. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on cycling and hiking tours, winter activities in Arnsfeld, or cultural and historical sites.
Townscape and Landscape
Mildenau developed as a forest-hufendorf village. Three- and four-sided farmsteads were built halfway up the mountain slopes. The town’s character is therefore shaped both by its buildings and by their hillside location. The surrounding landscape offers views toward the Preßnitztal, Rauschenbachtal, and Pöhlatal valleys; its distinctive hedgerow landscapes are also part of the scenery.
Cycling and Hiking Trails
The Hagebuttenweg is about 10 kilometers long and suitable for hiking and cycling. It runs between Mildenau, Geyersdorf, and Königswalde, alongside fields and old farm tracks. Viewpoints such as the Pöhlberg are among the sights along the route.
A longer option is the Annaberger Landring, a cycling and hiking route approximately 55 kilometers long. A cross-connection divides it into a northern and a southern loop, each about 30 kilometers long. These figures offer a concrete comparison of scale: the Hagebuttenweg covers around 10 kilometers, while the Landring also offers two larger loops to explore.
Nature and the Seasons
Information about local flora and fauna is available along the Hagebuttenweg. The Arnsfeld Tree Trail has a narrower focus: signs explain local trees and shrubs. When choosing between the two, you can decide whether you’re looking for information about plant and animal life or specifically about woody plants.
In Mildenau’s district of Arnsfeld, there are groomed cross-country ski trails and a ski lift. Operating conditions may vary by season, so check the latest information before visiting in winter. This lets you take winter activities into account when planning without assuming fixed operating hours.
History and Culture
The Mildenau History Trail runs for 2.89 kilometers through the town. It features 12 carved signs with text, as well as 50 ceramic plaques showing views of historic buildings. The route combines a walk through Mildenau with several forms of historical interpretation.
A landmark in the town’s history is the Protestant Church in Mildenau. It was built between 1834 and 1839 and is a protected cultural monument. The Mildenau Mining Trail can provide insight into the town’s historic mining industry. The scale of this historical activity is reflected in the approximately 230 tunnels and shafts that once existed in Mildenau.
More Trails and Seasonal Activities
The Pöhlatal–Rauschenbachtal–Preßnitztal Trail leads to just before the upper part of Mildenau and continues into the Rauschenbachtal Nature Reserve. If you plan to take this route, it’s a good idea to check its current course, as the trail may change.
Mildenau outdoor swimming pool is located on FreibadtalstraĂźe. Opening and operating times are seasonal; check the relevant information before visiting.
