The Western Thalheim Circular Hiking Trail is 14.92 kilometres long, moderately difficult and offers panoramic views. The starting point and finish are at Thalheim railway station. Along the way, the loop connects places including Rentners Ruh, the Hammerteich pond, Tabakstanne, the historic Eisenweg, Wille Gottes adit, the WiesenmĂĽhle, the church, town hall and Haus der Heimatkunde. Its length and moderate difficulty provide two points of reference for matching the route to your own hiking level.

Rentners Ruh is a miniature exhibition featuring more than 40 models and groups of figures. The Pionierweg also passes directly by Rentners Ruh. This makes it possible to treat the exhibition as a stop in its own right, alongside the longer circular hike. Bus and train services connect to the starting and finishing point, including services from Chemnitz, Aue, Thum and Stollberg, as well as the City-Bahn and replacement rail services. Check the timetable for your travel date.

Hiking on a larger scale

In the wider Erzgebirgskreis travel region, the signposted network of hiking trails covers around 4,500 kilometres. The Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. Mining has shaped the Erzgebirge landscape over the past 800 years, creating a varied cultural landscape. This regional perspective complements the specific circular hike with a broader hiking and mining context.

Mills, mining and local history

The WiesenmĂĽhle was built in 1838 and produced cold-pressed linseed oil until 1950. Its original historic machinery has been restored and is in working order. Visits are by telephone appointment; arrange your visit by phone in advance.

Haus der Heimatkunde is located in an extension of the town hall and displays pictures and exhibits on Thalheim’s history, including material on the hosiery industry. Visits to the house are also by telephone appointment. If you plan to visit both places, arrange each visit in advance.

The Wille Gottes adit is associated with the first recorded mention of the site, dating from 1510. Arsenopyrite from the adit was later given the special name “Thalheimit.” The private Buckelbergwerk Museum showcases traditional Erzgebirge woodturning and carving. Together, these subjects offer different perspectives on the region’s history: mining, crafts and everyday life in the town.

Art, tradition and practical information

The group of seven sculptures “Include Me Out” is installed in Buntsockenpark and forms part of a contemporary cultural project. A carillon with 14 bronze bells plays a seasonal melody four times a day. These two attractions complement the historic sites with public art and music.

The Forzbachl spring is considered an excursion destination. Its water is not officially classified as drinking water, and the spring is not designated as a source of drinking water. The local Easter water tradition involves washing with water from the spring before sunrise on Easter Day.

This lets you plan your visit around hiking or cultural history without having to follow a fixed itinerary.
