Visitors choosing Lengefeld as a destination can focus on church and industrial history or take excursions into wooded landscapes. The lime works, with a history dating back to the 16th century, is especially characteristic. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the historical subject, the museum visit, which is currently possible only to a limited extent, and a separate hiking route.

Lime works: industrial history and planning your visit

At the Lengefeld Lime Works Museum, the history of limestone quarrying can be traced back to the 16th century. The industrial focus covers the entire process, from quarrying limestone marble to producing stone flour and quicklime, which can be followed at original machinery. The focus is therefore on both extracting and processing the material. The museum is one of Europe’s most significant technical monuments of the historic binder industry.

The museum is closed until further notice due to ongoing construction work. Individual visits can be arranged by phone or email and depend on the construction work. Check whether such a visit is possible before setting out.

Hiking route at the lime works

One activity to consider is the “In the Footsteps of Limestone Quarrying” route. It is listed as a moderately difficult 9.9 km trail that starts and ends at the Lengefeld Lime Works Museum. Its difficulty and length give you a concrete basis for planning how much time to allow; check the route details before setting out. Plan the route and museum visit separately: an individual visit must be arranged separately and depends on the construction work.

Church and organ history

The Church of the Holy Cross adds a different layer of history. A predecessor building stood here even before the Reformation. The Hildebrandt organ was transferred from the old church, reconstructed and recommissioned at Pentecost 2014; a Luther monument stands in front of the church. Together, the organ and monument offer two tangible points of reference for church history, while the lime works focuses on the industrial processing of limestone.

Reservoir and wooded surroundings

At Neunzehnhain 2 Reservoir, the dam crest is open to visitors and offers views of the idyllic reservoir and its surroundings. The landscape is picturesque and densely wooded, making it a destination for cyclists and hikers. You can choose between different ways to experience the landscape: take in the view from the dam crest or go on an outing in the wooded surroundings.

Another historical point of interest

Schloss Rauenstein is a distinct regional historical attraction: the historic castle complex lies in the forests of the central Ore Mountains, high above the Flöha Valley. Rauenstein Castle was founded around 1250. Alongside church and industrial history, this early castle foundation offers another cultural focus to explore.

When planning, it is important to note the difference in visitor access: the dam crest is open to visitors, while an individual museum visit must be arranged and depends on the construction work.
