In Zwönitz, churches, historic buildings and technical collections reveal different facets of the town’s history. There are also guided tours with different themes: one leads through the lanes and past historic buildings, while another climbs up into the church tower. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between their respective itineraries and booking conditions.
Churches and Historic Buildings
The Trinity Church was first mentioned in 1320 and rebuilt in its present form between 1688 and 1692. Inside are a Baroque pulpit altar and an Eule organ. The church is also the starting point for the tower keeper tour, which includes access to the bell tower and a view from the Pfeiferstuhl.
Another historic destination is the Fronveste: in the Middle Ages it served as a prison, and in 2009 it became the home of Zwönitz’s night watchmen. The guided night watchman tour passes through the lanes by historically significant buildings and monuments. Stops include the Fronveste and the opportunity to look out over the city’s rooftops from the town hall tower. Advance booking is required.
The two tours have different focuses. The night watchman tour leads through the lanes and past historic buildings and monuments; the tower keeper tour starts at the Trinity Church and includes access to the bell tower. Check the availability and booking arrangements for the tower keeper tour before your trip.
St. Blasius Church is another historic point of interest: the old wayside chapel lies on the former salt road and has a preserved altarpiece with four figures. There is also a mechanical figure display at the town hall depicting a farmer’s wife, a miner, a monk and a shoemaker’s apprentice. Check the performance time before visiting.
Mill and Mining History
The history of the Niederzwönitz Paper Mill is traced from its first mention in 1568 to its conversion into a cardboard factory around 1868. The Technical Museum Paper Mill offers a smartphone multimedia tour and barrier-free access using virtual reality headsets. Guided tours and workshops on paper and cardboard making are available on request in advance. Check the current visitor arrangements before including the mill in your plans.
Those interested in traces of mining can consider the Zwönitz Mining History circular trail. It follows the remnants of the mining heritage of the historic mining town. It complements indoor exhibits and tours with a chance to see mining relics along a route.
Another collection is housed in the Austel Villa: the Bruno Gebhardt Collection displays coins, weapons and decorative arts. It is open seasonally; check visiting options in advance.
Light Art and Zwönitz Traditions
In Austel Park, the Purple Path light installation Color Floating can be seen above the Austel Pond. Its illuminated elements shine from dusk until midnight; during the cold season, the artwork is put into storage. This seasonal difference matters when planning a visit: check whether the installation will be on display during your trip.
The Zwönitz Hutzentage include an evening miners’ parade with more than 500 participants in costume. As this is a recurring seasonal event, check the current programme before your trip. The traditional Candlemas meal also offers a glimpse of local customs, featuring mulled wine, bratwurst and millet porridge. Check in advance which venues are taking part and on what dates.
The Knochenstampfe Local History Museum is closed for extensive renovation (as of August 16, 2026). Check its status before your trip.
There are several ways to plan your activities: explore church history and enjoy the views on a guided tour, discover craftsmanship and papermaking at the mill, or follow a circular trail through mining history. Events and seasonal offerings can add to your plans; be sure to check the relevant booking, enquiry and programme information.
