Geology, hiking trails and mining history give a stay in Scheibenberg different points of focus. On the mountain, the striking Organ Pipes and the formation of the landscape take centre stage; in town, the market square, local history museum and St. John's Church offer further glimpses into the past. For your planning, it is worth considering trails, visiting times and seasonal train services separately.

Geology and Hiking Trails on Scheibenberg

Scheibenberg rises to 807.2 metres above sea level and is one of the three basalt mountains in the Ore Mountains. The Organ Pipes at the summit are columns of cooled lava and evidence of Cenozoic volcanism. The geotope has National Geotope status. Around 21 million years ago, a lava flow filled a river valley. Because the rock resisted erosion, the former valley fill remained as a table mountain—a textbook example of inverted relief.

Those wishing to explore the surrounding area on foot will find a range of route descriptions. The 3-kilometre Upper Mountain Circuit, marked in yellow, leads to viewpoints with panoramic vistas. A summit hiking route passes the Organ Pipes and the ski jump before continuing along the Basalt Nature Trail and the Ottomar-Zahm Trail. The Basalt Nature Trail starts and ends at the BergstraĂźe Scheibenberg hiking car park. Markings, trails and access may change; check conditions before setting out.

The Basalt Trail covers more than the formation of the mountain: 15 panels explore the geological surroundings, flora and fauna, and the history of the mountain and the towns of Schlettau and Scheibenberg. Another option is a short bike ride through Schlettau Forest to Schlettau Castle. A tourism route also leads from Schlettau Castle to Scheibenberg and the Organ Pipes, following the region's long-distance hiking trails. Plan these routes using the relevant route descriptions and current conditions.

Getting There and Seasonal Information

You can reach the geotope by car via the B101 and BergstraĂźe, or by bus route 415, which runs between Annaberg-Buchholz, Scheibenberg and Aue. Check the timetable before travelling, as public transport connections may change. Temporary access restrictions may also affect the hiking car park and trailheads.

Scheibenberg lies halfway along the Ore Mountains Scenic Railway between Annaberg-Buchholz and Schwarzenberg. Excursion services run seasonally, so take operating dates into account when planning. The 28-metre-high observation tower is a landmark of the mountain.

Market Square, Museum and Mining History

The square market is surrounded by a grid-pattern street network whose layout has survived into modern times. The local history museum is housed in a Baroque building dating from 1743, right by the market square. It displays tools and objects from local crafts and trades of the past two centuries. Visits are by appointment.

St. John's Church combines Late Gothic and Baroque elements. Inside, there are prayer rooms and a gallery running around the interior; carved wooden garlands stretch for around 100 metres. If you would like to visit the church outside service times, arrange an appointment with the parish office. Advance registration may be required for longer visits.

Mining is also part of the town's history: mining at the Maria Magdalena mine is documented from 1478, and silver veins were discovered in 1515. For a meal, the BĂĽrger- und Berggasthaus serves Ore Mountain cuisine prepared with fresh regional ingredients. The menu may change.

Specific trail and visiting arrangements vary: a visit to the museum requires an appointment, as does a visit to the church outside service times; train services on the scenic railway are seasonal.
