Castle Views and a Waterfall in the Old Town
Large sections of the surrounding walls and a residential tower have been preserved at Saarburg Castle. Several viewing platforms and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley. The combination of surviving castle features and scenic viewpoints makes a visit a discovery for anyone who wants to experience history and landscape together.
The Tälchen Tour also takes in Saarburg, recommending a detour to the waterfall in the old town. Freudenburg Castle Ruins tell a different story. Roman Traces from Tawern to Trier
In Tawern, the Roman road settlement of Tabernae is considered the origin of the town. It was established shortly before the turn of the era on the Roman main road that led from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. A model of the settlement at a scale of 1:75 is on display in the pavilion; the large reconstructed temple complex is also located in the forest. In Konz, visitors can discover the remains of the Roman Imperial Palace: part of a cold-water pool about four metres high has survived. From the palace’s former terrace, there are views of the Moselle and Saar rivers and the surrounding mountains. In Konz, a structural remnant and a landscape view thus offer two different ways to explore the Roman past.
The Roman theatre at Kastel-Staadt is part of a 2.5-kilometre Archaeological Adventure Trail. Together with Tabernae and the remains in Konz, it shows how varied the Roman sites and structures in the area are: a settlement, palace remains, a temple complex or a theatre with its own trail.
Rhineland-Palatinate and Trier’s Roman Heritage
The wider destination of Rhineland-Palatinate places Trier in a broader historical context. The city was first a Roman colony, later an important trading centre and, at the end of the 3rd century, one of the capitals of the Tetrarchy. At the time, it was known as “Second Rome.” Trier preserves an exceptional concentration of important Roman structures and traces of Roman settlement north of the Alps. The Porta Nigra is considered a unique achievement of Roman architecture from the 2nd century.
Tours, Rocks and Trails
The Tälchen Tour begins and ends in Konz. It is designated as a moderately difficult circular route, is 37.28 kilometres long and is listed as taking about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Its stated destinations include the Wiltinger Saarbogen Nature Reserve; the tour also recommends a detour to the waterfall in Saarburg’s old town. The ViezstraĂźe is a 175-kilometre route from Merzig on the Saar, through the Saarburg region, to the Moselle city of Trier, and therefore extends beyond the immediate destination. Along the road, fruit growers, fruit brandy distillers, farmers, hoteliers and restaurateurs offer information, regional recipes and experiences centred on Viez. This links route-finding with a regional theme that features in a wide variety of offerings.
