Hentern offers two distinct trails that explore nature and land use as well as forest bathing and sensory exercises. Their different focuses make the trails practical points of reference when planning a stay.
The Knowledge Trail: Nature and Land Use
The Knowledge Trail starts at the village square and follows an approximately 2 km loop around and through Hentern. The route passes through meadows and fields and through the forest. Topics range from local flora and fauna, forestry and hunting to a weather station and a plant-based wastewater treatment system. Nature topics are thus presented alongside questions of land management and technical facilities. Visitors interested both in the local landscape and how it is used will find several thematic points of interest along this loop.
The Mindfulness Trail: Forest Bathing with Sensory Exercises
The Mindfulness Trail offers a forest-bathing experience with six illustrated stations and sensory exercises. You can allow approximately 1 to 1.5 hours for the entire route. No particular level of fitness is required. Parking is available at Haus AchtsamZeit. The stations provide a clear framework for forest bathing, while the estimated duration helps you fit the activity into your daily schedule.
The two trails in Hentern have different focuses: the Knowledge Trail centers on an approximately 2 km loop and its varied topics, while the Mindfulness Trail focuses on forest bathing, sensory exercises and an approximate duration. This lets you decide which trail better suits your interests—or whether you would like to include both in your stay.
Day trip options from Hentern
Day trips to Trier and Saarburg’s historic old town are also options from Hentern. Luxembourg and Saarbrücken are also considered easily accessible cities. This gives you additional destinations to choose from alongside the local trails. When looking for a hotel in Hentern, it helps to set a clear priority: do you want the two trails to shape your stay, or would you also like to plan trips to Trier, Saarburg, Luxembourg or Saarbrücken?
In the wider Trier-Saarburg destination
The wider Trier-Saarburg destination has a dense network of cycling and hiking trails along the Viezstraße. Orchard owners, distillers of fine fruit spirits, farmers, hoteliers and restaurateurs along the road offer information, regional recipes and experiences related to Viez. Cycling and hiking interests can therefore be combined with insights into the region’s Viez culture.
Another cycling route in the wider Trier-Saarburg destination is the Tälchen Tour, rated as moderate. It is 37.28 km long, with an estimated duration of around 2 hours and 45 minutes. The tour starts and ends in Konz, leads to the Wiltinger Saarbogen nature reserve and recommends a detour to the waterfall in Saarburg’s old town. Compared with Hentern’s approximately 2 km loop, it is a considerably longer route with its own stated difficulty level and duration.
Cultural attractions also broaden the picture of Trier-Saarburg. Large sections of Saarburg’s enclosing walls and a residential tower have been preserved; several viewing platforms and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley. In Tawern, the Roman road settlement of Tabernae is considered the origin of the town. It was established shortly before the turn of the era on the Roman main road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. The pavilion houses a model of the settlement at a scale of 1:75; the forest is also home to the large reconstructed temple complex. The free ARGO app lets you view it on site at full scale and in a 360-degree augmented reality presentation.
