Three sculpture trails, several museums, and hiking paths of widely varying lengths offer different ways to explore Hermeskeil: you can focus on art and local history, or take a closer look at nature trails and longer stages. For planning your trip, both specific route lengths and approximate durations are provided.
Art in the City and Museums
The three sculpture trails lead to numerous sights in Hermeskeil. Stops include fountains, the former Franciscan monastery, cemeteries, memorial sites, sundials, Stolpersteine memorial stones, and other public works of art. The routes thus connect sculptures with a variety of places throughout the town.
The “People and Landscape” experience museum explains the nature, landscape, and animal and plant life of Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park through an interactive exhibition. The nature park is a cross-border natural and cultural landscape covering an area of 2,055 km². Hermeskeil is also home to the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park Association’s information center.
Six locomotives are on display in the engine shed at the Hermeskeil Steam Locomotive Museum; more locomotives can be found on the grounds of the former railway depot. The Fire Brigade Museum focuses on a different aspect of history: it traces the development of firefighting from primitive methods to modern extinguishing technologies. Historic and modern fire engines round out the exhibition.
The Junior Aviation Exhibition features more than 100 original aircraft outdoors and in hangars. The exhibition also includes a Concorde with 150 seats and a café. Check café access and visiting arrangements before your visit.
Compare Circular Routes and Hiking Stages
The Hermeskeil Nature Discovery Trail is a 2.2 km circular route that starts in the Im Pflanzgarten recreation area. Information about forest animals and plants, along with stops for hands-on nature experiences, makes this a themed route. At 16.3 km, the HW-39-13 stage from Hermeskeil to Reinsfeld is considerably longer.
The stage starts at St. Martinus Parish Church on Martinusstraße. Information boards along the route tell the story of the life of Saint Martin. The Hermeskeil HK5 circular route showcases a different kind of landscape: it runs through the Lösterbach Valley, alongside the Lösterbach stream, and through dense forests. No route length is given here for the HK5, so its characteristics can be assessed mainly from the described woodland and stream scenery.
Five Dream Loops run through the Hermeskeil collective municipality. They mostly follow narrow nature trails along waterways and rock formations, continuing to viewpoints and natural or cultural monuments. These route descriptions cover the collective municipality, not just the town of Hermeskeil.
Plan a Town Walk and a Nature Experience
The family rally through Hermeskeil is planned as a circular route lasting approximately two hours. It can be adapted for a stroller or wheelchair if St. Fargeau Park is left out. A guided alternative is the town tour through Hermeskeil, which shares stories about special places. Another walk leads to Meister Bockart’s castle; along the way, you can learn about beavers and nature and take breaks by the Forstelbach stream.
The family rally is planned to take approximately two hours, while the Nature Discovery Trail and the HW-39-13 are described by their lengths of 2.2 and 16.3 km, respectively. These different planning measures can help you choose the activity that best suits your stay.
