Palzem and Wehr lie directly on the Moselle and are surrounded by vineyards. Winegrowing shapes the character of the area: Palzem is particularly known for Elbling, a grape variety that has been cultivated here since Roman times. Some vines above the Moselle grow on steep slopes and must be laboriously harvested by hand. The municipality also includes forests, meadows and small villages with historic centers.

Vineyards and Trails Around Palzem

The Moselsteig trail passes Palzem’s vineyards. Other well-signposted trails cross all parts of the municipality. This makes it possible to combine hikes with different village scenery, without every route showing the same stretch of landscape: alongside the vineyard slopes, forests and meadows are also part of the municipality’s scenery.

The Moselsteig side trail Wehrer Rosenberg offers views of the Moselle and Luxembourg. The route includes a via ferrata across steep limestone cliffs and narrow vineyard terraces. The trail starts at the parking lot by the Wehr stop and is not suitable for strollers. Check current trail conditions and access before setting out. If you are traveling with a stroller, take this restriction into account when choosing your route.

Plan Your Trip by Train or Bicycle

Regional trains stop in Palzem and Wehr on the Wittlich–Trier–Perl line. As schedules and stopping patterns may change, check your connection before traveling. When cycling, it is also worth noting the different starting points: the 2019 route guide places the start of the Moselle Cycle Route at the Saarland border near Schloss Thorn and Palzem. Palzem station is about two kilometers from this starting point and is on the Trier–Perl–Metz railway line. Before planning your trip, check current information on cycling and rail connections.

Near Palzem, the Moselle Cycle Route follows gentle vineyard hills and wide bends in the river; Luxembourg lies on the opposite bank. This offers two different ways to explore the area: on foot, along paths through vineyards and villages, or by bicycle, following the river landscape.

Roman Traces, Technological History and Church Architecture

The Roman Bridge of Palzem connects local history with views across the border: the bridge, dating from the early 1st century, connected Palzem with what is now Stadtbredimus in Luxembourg. You can view its reconstructed appearance on site using the free ARGO augmented reality app. The app depicts the former bridge; no original bridge structure remains.

In Kreuzweiler, the Bulldog and Agricultural Machinery Museum displays historic machines and equipment, offering a glimpse of what farming used to be like. Schloss Thorn is a winery with a history dating back to the 13th century. The Helfanter Dom, the Church of St. Bartholomew, is recognizable by its two massive towers, visible from far away. Together, these places offer different insights into the municipality’s history and architectural heritage.

Taste Wine and Choose a Place to Stay

At Weingut Carlsfelsen, wine tastings focus on local Elbling. Wines and regional specialties are served on a terrace overlooking the Moselle and the vineyards. Accommodation options include hotels and wineries with guest rooms; there is also a campground directly on the Moselle. Offerings and availability may change; check both for your planned stay.
