Wehr lies directly on the Moselle and is surrounded by vineyards. At Wehrer Rosenberg, terraced viticulture, distinctive habitats and hiking opportunities come together. Cultural history is also part of the town’s character. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Wehr, you can plan your stay around these interests.

Hiking on Wehrer Rosenberg

The premium hiking trail Wehrer Rosenberg is 4.8 kilometres long. The Wehrer Rosenberg Moselsteig side trail starts at the car park by the Wehr railway stop and leads back there. This provides a specific starting and return point for the hike. The trail lies within the “Kalkwälder bei Palzem” FFH area, which is part of Natura 2000. At Wehrer Rosenberg, a via ferrata also runs across steep limestone cliffs and narrow vineyard terraces. When planning, you can therefore choose between a hike with a specified length and a via ferrata through terrain characterised by cliffs and narrow terraces.

Vineyard terraces and habitats

The vineyard terraces of Wehrer Rosenberg are closely interwoven with valuable biotopes. These include limestone cliffs, warmth-loving shrubs and ravine forests. Rosenberg also has habitats for orchids and reptiles, as well as a rich variety of insects. Wehrer Rosenberg was recognised as a centre of biodiversity in 2020. At the same time, it is one of the few sites on the German side of the Moselle where terraced viticulture is practised. The wines from Wehrer Rosenberg have a distinctive flavour with a hint of rose fragrance. Viticulture and nature can therefore be seen together as defining features of Rosenberg.

Cultural history in Wehr

The restored altar in St Mark’s Church is dated 1721. In the central niche, it depicts the Madonna, flanked by the Evangelists Mark and Luke, with Saint Nicholas and Saint Helena above them. The church’s architecture also reflects its history: the tower and choir of the old church are incorporated into the new parish hall, built in 1964.

Another historical trace is the section rampart fortification near Wehr. It was a fortification on a spur-like projection of the Muschelkalk plateau between Helfanter Bach and the Moselle. The Via Caliga adds geological, Roman and viticultural themes to these local points of interest: its first section leads to Wehr, and 24 information panels in total explain the geological processes along the Upper Moselle, the Romans and viticulture.

Getting here and regional excursions

Regional trains running on the Wittlich–Trier–Perl route stop at Wehr (Mosel) station. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date. The car park by the railway stop is also the starting and return point for the Wehrer Rosenberg Moselsteig side trail, providing a specific reference point for this hike.

Further afield, the 30-kilometre “Steine am Fluss” section of the Rhineland-Palatinate Sculpture Trail offers a different kind of excursion: it can be explored on a day trip by bike.
