Newel combines the gentle hills of the southern Eifel with Roman traces that appear in different forms: at the Putzlöcher mine, in the Butzerbach Valley, and at the reconstructed long wall near Butzweiler. The branch church of St. Clement is another attraction. Landscape, archaeological sites, and a historic monument thus stand side by side as distinct focal points.

Landscape and trails in the Butzerbach Valley

Newel lies in the hilly landscape of the southern Eifel, characterized by agricultural land, extensive meadows, and forests. The landscape is ideal for hiking. The nearby Butzerbach Valley is home to a Roman copper mine complex and a quarry; stone extracted there was used for the Porta Nigra in Trier. The nature and adventure trail in the Butzerbach Valley forms part of the Eifelsteig. This connects the landscape there with a specific archaeological theme.

Roman traces and historic monuments

The Putzlöcher, on the border with Kordel, are within the municipality of Newel. The site was a Roman copper mine and quarry, used from the second half of the 2nd century until the end of the 3rd century. This time span places the complex in Roman history. Access conditions may vary, so check local conditions before visiting.

Another historical highlight is the small branch church of St. Clement: this post-Baroque hall church was built in 1806 and has a walled churchyard. The reconstructed Roman long wall is also located near Butzweiler. The original structure was 72 kilometers long, 80 centimeters thick, and two meters high. The church, mine, and long wall thus represent very different forms and scales of the region’s history of construction and use.

Hiking in the Pützlöcher area

The Eifelsteig Stage 15 and the approximately nine-kilometer Premium Römerpfad circular trail are designated routes in the Pützlöcher area. This gives you a long-distance trail stage and a tour described as a circular route, with an approximate length, to choose from. The Römerpfad starts either at the parking lot below Ramstein Castle ruins in Kordel or on Ramsteiner Weg in Butzweiler. Ramsteiner Weg is closer to the Pützlöcher. If you would like to include the Roman site in your hiking plans, this difference can help you choose a starting point. Routes and access points may change; check the latest information before your hike.

Newel in the wider Trier-Saarburg destination

A broader regional perspective adds to your orientation in Newel within the wider Trier-Saarburg destination. A cycling route plan for the district of Trier-Saarburg lists 492 kilometers of cycling routes. The Kyll Valley Cycle Route runs from the Eifel to the Moselle through meadows, forests, and river floodplains. Along the Viezstraße, there is an extensive network of cycling and hiking trails; fruit growers, fine fruit distillers, farmers, hoteliers, and restaurateurs offer information, regional recipes, and experiences centered around Viez. These regional themes broaden the picture beyond Newel’s own landscape, hiking connections, and Roman sites.
