A rare Prussian schoolhouse and the Hosteturm viewpoint give Kahren two distinctive points of interest: architectural history and expansive landscapes. The town also has other historic cultural landmarks and a farm offering in Saarburg-Kahren. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Kahren, these highlights can help you choose what to explore based on your interests.

Schoolhouse and Cultural Heritage

The former schoolhouse in Kahren was built around 1850 in the style of a chapel. It is one of the very few surviving examples of Prussian model buildings for one-room schools. The interior layout has also been preserved: an entrance hall, a teacher’s room and a three-bay classroom. The combination of chapel style, a rare type of school and a clearly defined room layout makes the building an engaging reference point for Kahren’s architectural history. The three-bay layout means that the classroom is divided into three bays, illustrating an architectural feature of the schoolhouse.

Kahren’s cultural landmarks include the Catholic branch church of St. Matthias, a Neo-Gothic hall church with a Gothic core and extensions dating from 1733, 1852 and 1913. These three dates refer to extensions, not to the construction of the schoolhouse, which dates to around 1850. The town’s cultural landmarks also include a village fountain from the 19th century and a wayside chapel from 1874. It is located southeast of the town on the road to Trassem.

Local History and Views

A circular trail equipped with information boards connects places of tourist interest in Kahren. The boards provide historical and local information. The trail therefore links places around the town while also offering insight into local history and the surrounding area.

A walking path popular with residents of the district offers lovely views of the town of Saarburg and the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. The views take in both the town and the landscape, encompassing Saarburg as well as the nature park.

The Hosteturm viewpoint stands on the 435 m-high Hosteberg in Kahren, regarded as the highest elevation between the Saar and the Upper Moselle. From the viewpoint, panoramic vistas stretch across the Saargau and the Hochwald, and as far as Luxembourg and France. The viewpoint is freely accessible. Unlike the views of Saarburg and the nature park, the panorama from the Hosteturm also takes in landscapes and countries beyond the immediate surroundings.

Farm Visits and Ice Cream

The Saargauhof in Saarburg-Kahren offers farm tours by request. If you would like to visit the farm, please arrange your visit in advance. The farm also sells its own homemade ice cream, with around 10 to 15 different specialties. The selection may vary, so you should not assume that the same flavours will be available at every visit.
