Wasserliesch combines two circular trails over Liescher Berg with Löschem Chapel and the Perfeist nature reserve. The distances provide an initial guide: each circular trail is about six kilometres long, while the wooded Stations of the Cross leading to the chapel is around 1.5 kilometres. At the central market square, remains of a Roman villa’s water supply and the bronze figures Schellenmann and Fährmann add to the townscape.

Circular Trails over Liescher Berg

The Wasserliesch Culture and Orchid Trail consists of two circular routes, each about 6 km long. They start at the market square and the tennis court, respectively, and lead over Liescher Berg. The elevation difference is given as approximately 200 m. Since the routes are similar in length, the starting point is a clear distinguishing feature; the distance and elevation figures provide different planning information. Check the route details locally before setting out.

Löschem Chapel and the Stations of the Cross

Löschem Chapel is a pilgrimage chapel with a Baroque façade. It can be reached via a wooded Stations of the Cross route about 1.5 km long, with fourteen sandstone stations and an ascent of approximately 200 m. From the chapel, views extend across the Moselle Valley, Trier and the surrounding hills. When comparing the routes, it is worth noting the different elevation figures: the Culture and Orchid Trail is listed as having an elevation difference of around 200 m, while the figure for the Stations of the Cross refers to the ascent to the chapel. These figures therefore do not describe the same route measure.

The Perfeist Nature Reserve

The Perfeist nature reserve lies on Liescher Berg and is a heath-like orchid area with a designated walking trail. Its natural features include numerous butterfly species and rare plants. The orchid flowering season is given as April to June; its exact timing may vary from year to year. For travel planning, this period is a general guide, not a fixed flowering date.

Roman Remains at the Market Square

At the central market square, remains of a Roman villa’s water supply stand alongside bronze sculptures of the figures “Schellenmann” and “Fährmann.” Here, a Roman architectural relic and two named figurative motifs come together in one place.

Trier-Saarburg: More Tours and Cultural Attractions

The wider Trier-Saarburg destination offers other distinct tours and cultural attractions. The Trier-Saarburg district already has 492 kilometres of cycling routes. The Tälchen Tour is rated moderate, is 37.28 kilometres long and is listed as taking about 2 hours and 45 minutes. It starts and ends in Konz, leads to the Wiltinger Saarbogen nature reserve and recommends a detour to the waterfall in Saarburg’s old town.

Tawern is a key Roman-history destination: the roadside settlement of Tabernae is considered the origin of the town and was established shortly before the start of the Common Era on the main Roman road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. The pavilion houses an authentic model of the settlement at a scale of 1:75; in the forest is the large reconstructed temple complex of Tawern. The free ARGO app lets visitors view the complex on site at full size and as a 360-degree augmented reality display.

In Konz, part of a cold-water basin about 4 metres high survives from the Roman imperial palace. From the palace’s former terrace, there are views of the Moselle and Saar rivers and the surrounding mountains. At Saarburg Castle, large sections of the perimeter walls and a residential tower remain; several viewing platforms and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley.

The Viez Route also brings together regional trails and food culture. Fruit growers, fine-fruit distillers, farmers, hoteliers and restaurateurs along the route offer information, regional recipes and experiences centred on Viez. There is also an extensive network of cycling and hiking trails along the Viez Route.
