From Bocksteinfels, the view stretches across Ockfen, Irsch, the vineyards and the Saar Valley toward Saarburg; from the Geisberg plateau, the panoramic view extends across the Saargau toward Luxembourg and Trier. These viewpoints reveal two different sides of the landscape and offer specific destinations for a stay focused on wine and hiking.

Wine Country at Bockstein

The Ockfener Bockstein is Ockfen’s most important vineyard site and also the local hill. This 53-hectare wine-growing area lies above the village, beside the Ockfener Bach. Devonian clay slate shapes the conditions in the vineyards and contributes to the wine’s mineral profile. Bockstein is designated a VDP Erste Lage. Ockfen is also associated with wine tastings and wine trails. Its location, geology and wine profile offer a specific, local perspective on the landscape.

Viticulture and Local History

Viticulture in Ockfen is said to date back around 2,000 years; a Bronze Age socketed axe found in a vineyard is cited as evidence. A connection with a monastery is also documented in historical records: in 975, Ockfen was listed under the name Villa Occava among the estates of the newly re-established St. Martin’s Monastery in Trier. A former administrative building of the monastery bears witness to this connection. The history of viticulture and the monastery records offer two distinct ways to explore the village’s past.

Trails and Viewpoints

The 8.7-kilometer short route of the Saar-Riesling Trail starts at the fishing pond in Ockfen. It leads to Bocksteinfels, the Heppenstein viewpoint, the Bismarck Tower and the Geisberg plateau. The route connects sunny vineyards with deciduous and coniferous forests, as well as idyllic stream valleys. If you want to head straight for Bocksteinfels, the Saar-Riesling Trail leads there from the car park at the fishing pond, a distance of around 1.5 kilometers. From the rock, the view stretches across Ockfen, Irsch, the vineyards and the Saar Valley toward Saarburg. By contrast, from the Geisberg plateau, the panoramic view opens across the Saargau toward Luxembourg and Trier. The two viewpoints thus offer different vistas over the landscapes described.

Another option is a circular route that starts and ends at the Weinhotel Klostermühle in Ockfen. It passes the Ockfen Wine Estate, Schoden’s Bismarck Tower and the Saar Riverside Trail. St. Valentine’s Church is also a stop on a local circular route.

Dining, Accommodation and Getting There

The restaurant at the Weinhotel Klostermühle lists trout from the Leukbachtal and Saar wines on its menu. Restaurant offerings may change, so check the current selection before visiting. The Weinhotel Klostermühle has step-free access and an accessible toilet. If you rely on these facilities, confirm them again before your trip. Schoden-Ockfen station is on the Saarbrücken–Trier DB railway line. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel dates.
