Taben-Rodt combines hiking routes through the landscape with viewpoints and historic buildings. Seven circular hiking trails, the Maunert Rock Trail and the European long-distance trail E3 offer different ways to explore the town and its surroundings on foot. Also nearby are the Saar Cycle Route and trails whose history dates back to an earlier ferry crossing over the Saar.
Hiking trails with clearly marked options
The local network comprises seven circular hiking trails and the Maunert Rock Trail. The European long-distance trail E3 also passes through Taben-Rodt and follows some of these trails. The stated difficulty and route length provide a clear guide when choosing a circular route: Circular Trail 1 is an easy 4-kilometre loop. It starts and ends at the car park by the youth and community centre. Circular Trail 4 is rated moderate, is 5 kilometres long and starts and ends at St Michael’s Chapel.
The Maunert Rock Hike is also described as moderate. It is 1.8 kilometres long and requires sure-footedness and sturdy footwear. The Maunert Rock Trail leads to a summit cross and continues as a scramble along the ridge. From the 416-metre-high Maunert summit cross, the view extends over Taben-Rodt, Serrig, the Kastel Plateau and the Saar Valley.
Circular Trail 6 descends towards the Saar and returns to St Michael’s Chapel via the Kaiserweg. The Kaiserweg is a 10-kilometre hike from the chapel through the Tabener Urwald and Saarsteilhänge nature reserves. Route distances and trail alignments may change; check local information before setting out.
Forest and viewpoints
Taben-Rodt is in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and is surrounded by forest. The Tabener Urwald is also part of the area’s natural character: this natural forest reserve is known for its rare and very rare beetle species. Alongside views of the rocks and valleys, forest habitats are a defining feature of the landscape.
Another viewpoint is St Michael’s Chapel, a Gothic building dating from the mid-15th century, perched on a high rock above the Saar. From the chapel, the view stretches across the Saar Valley; the Saar lies about 150 metres below. While this viewpoint focuses on the river and valley, the panorama from the Maunert summit cross also includes Taben-Rodt, Serrig and the Kastel Plateau.
Historic trails and the Saar Cycle Route
The Hausener Path recalls a former route across the Saar. Residents of Taben used it to reach Saarhausen and cross the river by small ferry. The Propstey St. Josef also has a long history: it was founded in 769 as a monastic branch of St Maximin in Trier.
The annual parish fair includes a traditional procession in honour of Quiriacus, starting at the Propstey St. Josef. Details of the celebration may vary. If the fair is a key part of your stay, check the dates for the relevant event.
Taben-Rodt is also a starting point for cycling: the Saar Cycle Route reaches the town, whose landmark is St Michael’s Chapel. You can continue along the Saar via Mettlach to Saarbrücken. Check the current route and conditions before setting off.
