Geisfeld lies on the edge of Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. Forests and meadows shape the surrounding landscape. You can choose from different ways to spend your time here: walking trails, the Wald-Wiesen-Wacken cycling route and the architectural history of the Catholic parish church of St. Mary, Queen of the Rosary. Nature and a clearly defined cultural focus come together here. You can get to know Geisfeld through its landscape, a cycling route or its architectural history.

Hiking in the Surrounding Area

Well-maintained hiking trails and the Königsfeld Loop invite you to explore the landscape around Geisfeld. The Königsfeld Loop is part of the Saar-Hunsrück Premium Hiking Region and is accessible by public transport. The Panorama Trail passes the Marterpfahl and Ämeskreuz. These two landmarks provide named points of reference along the trail.

The trail descriptions highlight different features: for the Königsfeld Loop, its location in the Premium Hiking Region and accessibility by public transport are relevant. On the Panorama Trail, Marterpfahl and Ämeskreuz stand out as specific points along the route. Together with the forests and meadows around Geisfeld, this offers a choice between exploring the landscape and following a trail with named landmarks.

Cycling: Route and Section

The Wald-Wiesen-Wacken cycling route is 45 kilometres long and follows surfaced natural paths, some of which are gravel. It is considered suitable for e-bikes. A 20.8-kilometre section passes through Geisfeld, Beuren, Pölert and Rascheid. The two distances refer to different scales: 45 kilometres is the full route, while 20.8 kilometres is the section through these four towns.

The route also passes through Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and small Hunsrück-Hochwald settlements with places to rest and stop for refreshments. The Trier-Saarburg district already has 492 kilometres of cycling paths. This figure describes the wider regional network alongside the individual Wald-Wiesen-Wacken route.

Church Architecture and Remembrance

The Catholic parish church of St. Mary, Queen of the Rosary is a listed building with a medieval tower and a Baroque nave. Balthasar Neumann drew up a plan for the church in 1753; the nave was built in 1753/54 based on his preliminary design. The choir followed in 1767/68, and the medieval tower received a new roof in 1774. This sequence reveals several stages of construction: the medieval tower, the Baroque nave, the later choir and the alteration to the tower roof. The nave is the church’s elongated main space.

Another historical point of interest is the nearby Geisfeld-Abtei Airmen’s Memorial. It commemorates fallen soldiers who took part in an aerial battle on January 29, 1944. The church and the memorial represent different historical themes: the church tells the story of several stages of construction, while the memorial is dedicated to a clearly dated event.
