A rural cultural heritage with a long history: The Unterkagererhof was first mentioned in a document in 1287. Its characteristic Mühlviertel four-sided farmhouse layout is still the same as it was around 300 years ago. During your visit, you can see the Durchhaus with its rammed-earth floor, the working bread oven, the cabbage cellar, the Black Kitchen and the Auszugsstüberl. Here, you encounter history not only in a date, but also in the farmhouse’s rooms and architectural features.

History in Farmhouses, Churches and Museums

Schlägl Abbey also brings historical continuity together with tangible architecture: members of the Premonstratensian order have lived and worked there since 1218. The abbey church is a three-aisled Gothic church. Its altars, pulpit and choir stalls date from the 17th and 18th centuries and feature elaborate carving and inlay work. At the pilgrimage church of Maria Trost, the history reaches back to an even older site: the church was built in 1645/1655 on the site of a ruined castle.

Literary and regional connections are at the heart of the Adalbert Stifter Museum and Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald Local History Museum. Since 2005, a permanent exhibition has been dedicated to Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald, the three-country region, and Adalbert Stifter’s life and literary and visual art. The VILLA sinnenreich in Rohrbach-Berg offers a different perspective: this perception museum explores the world between illusion and reality.

Exploring Crafts and Production

At the Weaving Museum in Haslach, you can follow the process from raw material to finished fabric: the exhibition shows the steps from processing flax to making linen, as well as the development of handlooms up to the Jacquard machine. The Textile Centre Haslach brings together textile history and culture with production and training. Together, these subjects offer different perspectives on textile work—from its development to the passing on of skills and production.

The MĂĽhlviertel Oil Mill also connects craftsmanship with its history. Guided tours explain the history of the oil mill and historical oil-production methods. A guided tour with an oil tasting takes place every Thursday at 11 a.m., with no advance booking required. A visit to the Hop Experience Farm includes a short walk to the hop fields, a visit to the hop museum, a guided tour and a film about the hop harvest.

The Printing Museum illustrates the development of printing over the past 100 years, and visitors can take part in the activities. On a guided tour, you can follow a printed product from its creation through to its finishing. Visits are possible year-round by arrangement. Another technical collection is the Mechanical Music Factory Museum, which displays 150 exhibits of mechanical musical instruments from the Baroque period to the present day. During guided tours, the instruments are played and their inner workings demonstrated.

Perception, Trails and Views

For a change of pace between museums and the outdoors, there are several themed trails to choose from. A chapel trail leads from the town square in Rohrbach-Berg to Maria Trost Church; information boards along the way describe the origins and history of the chapels. The Rohrbach-Berg Panorama Trail offers views over Rohrbach-Berg, the Böhmerwald holiday region and the Mühlviertel. The pilgrimage church and chapel trail thus connect a specific route with the history of the chapels.

For those interested in a longer hike, the Granitpilgern hiking trail is a multi-day option: it runs for around 95 kilometres through the southeastern part of the Rohrbach district and is designed to be completed in three to four daily stages. The approximate distance and number of stages give you an idea of the time required, without prescribing a specific daily itinerary.

Wildlife Park and Autumn Event

Altenfelden Wildlife Park is home to more than 1,000 animals from over 200 species across 80 hectares. A circular trail leads from the wildlife park to Rabenstein and takes about five hours. If you plan to take this trail, you can allow time for it as a longer standalone activity. The wildlife park is also home to the “cultum venandi” Hunting Culture Museum, which explores the history and traditions of hunting.

The Witch Market in Auberg offers another seasonal attraction. It has become a regular autumn event and draws numerous visitors each year. As event details may change from year to year, it is worth checking the dates for the relevant year before planning your visit.
