Haslach an der Mühl combines traditional textile craftsmanship with architectural history and nature experiences. To plan your visit, it helps to organise the options by interest: are you mainly interested in weaving and wool processing, historic buildings, musical instruments or views of the Steinerne Mühl? These different themes offer a variety of ways to plan your stay.

Textile History and Craftsmanship

The Weaving Museum was founded in 1971 and moved to the Textile Centre Haslach in 2012. The exhibition traces the process from preparing flax to the finished linen fabric, while also showing the development of weaving technology, from handlooms to the Jacquard loom. This brings together two aspects of the same subject: the processing of a material and the evolution of the technology used for it.

The Haslach manufactory offers a different perspective. On guided tours, you can follow the journey of wool through to the finished quality product. Check the latest tour schedule before planning your visit, as times may change. Linen made from flax and wool products represent different textile materials and processing steps.

The Weavers’ Market brings the textile tradition into public spaces: since 1992, it has been held annually over two days in the winding lanes of the old part of town known as “auf der Stelzen” and in the market square. Around 90 exhibitors from several countries present textile work and handmade products for sale; the number may vary from one edition to the next. Since event dates also change each year, check the date for the relevant year before your trip.

Architectural History and Music

The Parish Church of St Nicholas is considered the grandest Late Gothic church in the Upper Mühlviertel. Its freestanding tower was built as a defensive tower for the market town’s fortifications. The Old Tower was also part of Haslach’s historic fortifications, which were built between 1483 and 1487. These buildings offer different ways to explore the Late Gothic church and the town’s former fortifications.

The Mechanical Sound Factory features 150 musical instruments and other musical exhibits spanning the Baroque period to the present day. During guided tours, instruments are played and their inner workings demonstrated. The Kaufmann Museum, by contrast, recreates a historic shop: it evokes the shopping atmosphere of a fully stocked general store around 1920. The museum will be closed for renovation in 2026; it is scheduled to reopen in May 2027.

Nature Experiences on Trails and by the River

The nature trail lets visitors experience nature at stations that engage sight, touch, feel and smell. There are also play and dexterity stations, and the trail ends at a playground. Welset Pühret, by the Steinerne Mühl, has a four-kilometre nature trail, a small bathing area and a small playground. Welset Pühret is freely accessible. In summer, the Steinerne Mühl is also a place to cool off; this seasonal attraction is for the warmer months.

For those who want to enjoy views along a trail, the Haslach circular route offers several viewpoints. The Mühlviertel oil mill, also known as Stahlmühle, has a different connection to the river landscape. It is located in Haslach where the Steinerne Mühl flows into the Große Mühl. Linseed oil has been pressed there for more than 500 years—a tangible glimpse into a long-standing local production tradition.
