At 850 metres, the Hansberg is the highest elevation in Sankt Johann am Wimberg. The village offers hiking trails with views as far as the Alps or—on clear days—as far as the Dachstein, seasonal winter activities and leisure facilities such as a swimming area and pump track. When planning your trip, the time of year therefore matters just as much as whether you mainly want to hike, visit cultural sites or plan other activities.
Trails and views
The Hansbergrunde starts in the centre of Sankt Johann am Wimberg. The Höhenweg also starts there, by the hiking information board. Its route leads over the Kalvarienberg to the chapel and continues to the Petersberg; from there, the view extends as far as the Alps. On clear days, the Petersbergrunde offers views as far as the Dachstein. This gives you a clear distinction when choosing a route: the Höhenweg passes named landmarks, while views of the Dachstein on the Petersbergrunde depend on clear weather.
Local history and culture
The Solferinokapelle, built in 1861, is located on the Petersbergrunde. The parish church of St. Johann am Wimberg was consecrated on 1 January 1147 by Bishop Reginbert of Passau. The Schnopfhagendenkmal on the Hansberg commemorates Hans Schnopfhagen. The Hansinger traditional costume is another local cultural reference: its main colours are blue, red and grey or anthracite. The dates of the construction and church history mentioned here are far apart: the church was consecrated in 1147, while the Solferinokapelle was built in 1861.
Winter and other activities
The Panoramaloipe runs over the Petersberg, connects Sankt Johann am Wimberg with two neighbouring municipalities and offers views as far as the Alps. As this is a seasonal winter route, check snow and trail conditions before setting out. The Hansberg Ski School offers ski courses for children during school holidays. Ski lessons for adults are also part of its seasonal programme; private lessons can be arranged individually. Conditions vary even within the winter activities: snow and trail conditions should be checked for the cross-country ski trail, and children’s courses are tied to the school holidays.
Another way to stay active is the pump track in Sankt Johann am Wimberg: its undulating terrain lets you work on your riding technique without pedalling. The Lummerstorf leisure pond has a swimming area with a large sunbathing lawn and sandy beach. Facilities may vary by season. The pump track and pond offer different kinds of recreation: riding technique at the former, swimming and sunbathing at the latter.
Plan your journey
From Linz, the road route follows the B127 to Gerling and continues via Herzogsdorf. The MĂĽhlkreisbahn runs to Neufelden station, which is about 12 km from Sankt Johann am Wimberg. If travelling by train, take this distance into account when planning your onward journey and check connections before departure.
