Hiking in Hörbich can be planned using both a clear timeframe and a sequence of named stops. Historic places such as Tannberg and Furthkreuz connect the trails with the history of the surrounding area.
Two Hiking Trails, Different Ways to Navigate
The Bauernkriegweg – Große Runde is 15 kilometres long and takes four hours to walk. Its route passes through Eiglersdorf, Furthkreuz, the “Garten” house, and Tannberg before continuing into the valley of the Kleine Mühl. The four hours refer to walking time; if you plan breaks, their duration is additional. This gives you a specific timeframe for the loop, and you can factor in time for rests separately.
The Mühlviertler Mittellandweg 150er passes through Außerhötzendorf in the municipality of Hörbich. It continues via Tannberghof and Schloss Tannberg to the valley of the Kleine Mühl in Doppl. While you can gauge the Große Runde by its 15 kilometres and four hours of walking time, the 150er is navigated using the names of places and landscapes. Außerhötzendorf locates one section in Hörbich; Tannberghof and Schloss Tannberg lie along the further route, before the trail reaches the valley in Doppl.
Tannberg: Castle Ruins and Former Estate
Tannberg Castle stands high above a bend in the Kleine Mühl. It was first mentioned in a document in 1180. In 1538, Tannberg was united with Marsbach, administered from there for a short time, and subsequently left to decay. This brings the location of the ruins and two important historical dates into view together: the first documented mention and the later developments following the union with Marsbach.
Tannberghof is a former estate belonging to Tannberg Castle. The name therefore refers to a distinct place with a historical connection to the castle, not to the castle ruins themselves. Both the Bauernkriegweg – Große Runde and the Mühlviertler Mittellandweg 150er pass places whose names are associated with Tannberg; the Mittellandweg also names Tannberghof. Together with its position above the bend in the Kleine Mühl, this establishes a clear connection between the named hiking stops and the history of the castle.
Local Chapel and Furthkreuz Wayside Shrine
The register entry dated 23 June 2026 lists the local chapel in Hörbich as protected under monument protection pursuant to Section 3, based on a protection order. An entry also dated 23 June 2026 lists the Furthkreuz wayside shrine in Eiglersdorf as protected under monument protection pursuant to a regulation. Furthkreuz is also part of the route of the Bauernkriegweg – Große Runde. If you are planning this loop, you can also identify the named waypoint as the protected Furthkreuz wayside shrine; the chapel is another heritage site in Hörbich.
