A one-of-a-kind Stifter hologram, glass objects from the region’s glassworks era and striking destinations in the Bohemian Forest offer different ways to experience Schwarzenberg Am Böhmerwald. When planning a stay, you can consider culture, views and winter sports as separate focuses. This helps you decide which experiences you want to shape your stay.

Stifter Museum and the History of Glassmaking

Since 2005, the Adalbert Stifter Museum and Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald Local History Museum has housed the permanent exhibition “Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald and the Three-Country Region in the Life and Work of Adalbert Stifter”. One of its highlights is the world’s only Stifter hologram. Glass objects in the museum document the era of three thriving Schwarzenberg glassworks from 1638 to 1863. Alongside Stifter’s life and work, the museum also shines a light on a chapter of the region’s glassmaking history.

The local history museum is equipped with a contactless entry system and electronic audio guides. Visitors can explore it independently, including the Adalbert Stifter exhibition and the Holy Sepulchre. Check the current access arrangements before your visit.

Wood Art and the Bohemian Forest

Many impressive wooden sculptures feature throughout Schwarzenberg. They were created at artists’ symposia attended by artists from around the world. The sculptures add another cultural focus to a visit to the museum.

Views, Elevation and Border Location

Teufelsschüssel is a rocky viewpoint in the Bohemian Forest with views across the region. From the Oberschwarzenberg car park, you can reach the rock via the Dreiländerweg in about 45 minutes on foot. Plöckenstein offers a different highlight: at 1,378 metres, it is the highest point in the Austrian part of the Bohemian Forest, the entire Mühlviertel and South Bohemia.

The border between Austria and the Czech Republic runs directly over Plöckenstein; the Austria-Germany-Czech Republic tripoint is about one kilometre away. When choosing a nature destination, you can weigh up different features: the views and walking time at Teufelsschüssel, or the elevation and border location at Plöckenstein.

Kneipp Trail and Winter Sports

The artistically designed Kneipp barefoot trail features water treatments for the arms and feet. It offers a different focus from the rocky viewpoints and Plöckenstein.

At the Hochficht ski area by the Schwarzenbergbahn, the needs of beginners and families are a priority. Nine lifts take winter sports enthusiasts from A to B across almost 30 kilometres of slopes in total, with varying levels of difficulty. The area includes two kids’ parks, a fun park and a Funslope. The options for a trip therefore vary considerably, from Stifter’s life and the history of glassmaking to nature destinations and winter sports at Hochficht.
