Altenfelden combines a wildlife park, hiking opportunities and ecclesiastical heritage with a clearly defined geographical setting: the municipality lies on a ridge between the Kleine MĂĽhl and GroĂźe MĂĽhl rivers. When planning a stay, you can focus on the wildlife, the hiking trails or the historic details of the parish church.

Wildlife Park and Hiking Trails

More than 1,000 animals from over 200 species live at Altenfelden Wildlife Park. The shorter hiking route in the park takes about two hours and passes all the animals. The route provides an approximate timeframe for planning your day; before your visit, check the park’s conditions, as access may vary.

The MĂĽhltal Circular Trail No. 21 is a loop hike; hiking information for the Wildpark Trail No. 22 is available to download as a PDF. The information answers different planning questions: No. 21 is identified as a loop, while you can use a PDF to prepare for No. 22.

Ecclesiastical Heritage

The large historic Nativity scene in a display case in Altenfelden Parish Church dates from 1820 to 1850. It is located in the left side chapel, on a Neo-Gothic altar carved by master altar builder Kepplinger from Ottensheim. The Nativity scene comprises 30 cloth-dressed figures and 40 sheep, as well as an ox and a donkey carved from wood and painted. Its date, location and features offer different clues for understanding the object’s historical and artistic context.

Another historical artefact is found in the north chapel: the gravestone of Gertrude Steinpöck, dating from 1355. Compared with the Nativity scene, it marks a much earlier point in the parish church’s history.

Another historical landmark is the chapel replacement of 1875. At that time, the municipality of Altenfelden had a small chapel demolished and replaced with a much larger stone chapel. The reason was the growing influx of pilgrims from far away, including from Bohemia. Their origin in Bohemia illustrates the far-reaching extent of the influx and links the building changes to a specific cause.

Hunting History at the Wildlife Park

In 2019, the 50th anniversary year, the Cultum Venandi hunting culture museum opened in the centre of Altenfelden Wildlife Park. It aims to introduce visitors to the history and significance of hunting in today’s society and cultural landscape. Alongside the wildlife, it offers a cultural and historical perspective on hunting.

Location Between the Kleine MĂĽhl and GroĂźe MĂĽhl

The municipality of Altenfelden lies on a ridge between the Kleine Mühl and Große Mühl rivers. The Kleine Mühl forms the municipality’s natural eastern boundary, while the Große Mühl forms its natural western boundary. The ridge and rivers describe different aspects of the location: the ridge lies between the two rivers, each of which forms one boundary of the municipality.
