In Berg Bei Rohrbach, church and castle history meet a well-marked network of hiking and cycling trails. The MĂĽhlkreisbahn Museum in Rohrbach-Berg adds another dimension, highlighting the history of technology. You can tailor your trip to your interest in historic buildings, railway technology or the landscape. These differences can help you choose your preferred focus before looking for hotels for your stay.
Maria Trost Church and Castle History
Maria Trost Church was built in the 17th century following a vow made by Wolfdietrich von Rödern. He vowed to build a church in honour of the Mother of God on the mountain’s summit if his castle was spared. Construction began around 1645 and was completed in 1655. The vow describes the church’s religious dedication; the start and completion dates establish the timeframe for its construction.
The castle’s history is also precisely dated: the castle on the mountain near Rohrbach was burned down in 1626 during the Peasants’ War. Remains of Berger Castle can be seen above the former Meierhof as an archway or tower. Alongside the historic event, these surviving structures serve as reminders of the former castle complex.
The Berger Kirtag, an annual event held around the church, takes place for the feast of the patron saint of Maria Trost in early September. If you would like to combine your trip with this event, check the date for your travel period.
Railway History in Rohrbach-Berg
The MĂĽhlkreisbahn Museum was established in 1998 in the Rohrbach-Berg railway station building. Rohrbach-Berg station is right next to the museum. The exhibits cover the construction and history of the 58-kilometre railway line, as well as track construction work. Thus, both the development of the line and work on the track bed are among the exhibition topics. The railway control office and waiting room have been faithfully restored, adding two more station rooms to the exhibition.
The centrepiece and main attraction is the steam locomotive “Aigen”, which is over 120 years old. Children can also enjoy a special experience: they can ride in the yellow luggage wagon, which formerly transported luggage around the station. Visits to the Mühlkreisbahn Museum are by telephone appointment; please arrange your visit in advance by phone.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
Berg has a well-marked network of hiking and cycling trails. The tourist attractions also include the Wandergolfweg in Kollonödt. One specific hiking option is the Panoramaweg Rohrbach-Berg, which is rated very easy. Along the route are three viewpoints offering excellent views of the Bohemian Forest, Rohrbach-Berg, the Mühlviertel and the Alps. The trail network offers a choice between hiking and cycling, while the Panoramaweg, with its difficulty rating and viewpoints, describes a specific hiking route.
Another aspect of the landscape can be found on the southern edge of Berger Forest. There, a wood-rush beech forest is considered a botanical treasure in terms of plant sociology. This classification draws attention to the forest community itself, complementing the topics of trails and views with a botanical perspective. If you are interested in forest communities, this offers a distinct natural highlight to consider when planning your trip.
