Niederkappel lies in the southwest of the MĂĽhlviertel on the steep slope above the Danube Loop. There are various ways to explore the area: hiking trails with specific landmarks, local circular routes with approximate walking times, cultural history or leisure activities. When planning, it helps to consider whether you want to focus on a viewpoint, a particular destination or a themed stop.

Hiking Trails on the Danube Loop

The Donauschlingenweg leads to the ruins of Haichenbach and its observation tower. On the left bank of the Danube, it runs downstream to the Donauschlinge nature trail. This route thus features both a named destination and a nature trail; the ruins and their tower, and the nature trail’s themes, offer different points of focus.

The Donauschlinge nature trail is 3.5 kilometres long. Information boards provide details about geology, fauna and flora. This makes it an option for choosing a route not only by its length, but also by the topics covered along the way. Views and knowledge of nature offer two different reasons to explore the landscape around the Danube Loop.

Local Circular Routes with Approximate Walking Times

The Niederkappler Kreislauf is a local circular route of about 2.8 kilometres, taking approximately 1.5 hours to walk. The Verdauungsrunde, also known as the MĂĽhlberg-Runde, is shorter at about 2.4 kilometres and takes approximately one hour. The stated route lengths differ by around 0.4 kilometres, and the walking times by about half an hour. Both sets of figures are approximate and provide a practical guide for planning your time, without either route being classified as easier or more challenging.

Church, Views and Themed Trails

The Mühlviertler Dom is a Gothic church dating from 1404 to 1411; it was renovated between 1890 and 1895. These dates distinguish the original construction period from the later structural changes. Guided tours for groups focus on the building’s history, offering a different point of interest from the hiking trails.

The Dr. Kirchschläger-Steig also combines a trail with a specific theme. Along the route, stations featuring portraits and quotations offer insights into the life and work of Dr. Rudolf Kirchschläger. The trail includes the Präsidentenstuhl viewpoint, which is also a rest area. The route therefore offers both a viewpoint and stations about Kirchschläger’s life.

The Grain viewpoint offers a different perspective on the area: from there, the view extends over gentle hills and forests to Niederkappel and the MĂĽhlviertler Dom. If you would like to include another marked hiking route in your plans, the Teufelskirche can be reached from Teufelbauer via a marked hiking trail in 20 minutes. These routes therefore have specific destinations, and the Teufelskirche route also has an approximate walking time.

Outdoor Pool and Leisure Park

The heated Niederkappel outdoor pool has a spacious sunbathing lawn, shaded areas, a children’s pool and an adjacent playground. Its facilities make the pool a different kind of destination from the routes and viewpoints: the focus here is on swimming, sunbathing and play.

The “Gstoanarat” leisure park has a children’s playground with a play tower, slide, suspension bridge, climbing carousel, low ropes course and crawl tunnels. A picnic area adds to the facilities. Short hiking trails run around the leisure park and offer views. The park therefore combines play and picnic facilities with trails where the views are part of the outing.

Plan Your Journey and Stay

Niederkappel is easily reached from Linz by public bus in just over an hour. If you plan to travel by bus, check the latest connections before setting off. The Donaubus Längsfähre operates between Au in the municipality of Hofkirchen and Grafenau in the municipality of Niederkappel. It is also a good idea to check the timetable in advance if you plan to take the ferry.

The options described can be grouped according to different interests: a local circular route and approximate walking time, a nature trail and information boards, a viewpoint, architectural history or leisure activities. This lets you tailor your stay in Niederkappel to what interests you most and choose destinations that fit your plans.
