Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis offers two distinct focuses for planning a trip: challenging trails and historic cultural sites. The Donausteig runs for 450 kilometers through the Bavarian–Upper Austrian Danube Valley between Passau and Grein. The long-distance hiking trail was officially launched in early July 2010 at the Schlögen Danube Loop in the market town of Hofkirchen i. M.

Hiking and cycling: different levels of difficulty

The Waterfall Loop is a challenging circular trail through the wooded Danube slope. It leads to the Danube and then climbs back up to the plateau. The change in elevation is therefore part of the route and an important factor when assessing its difficulty.

The Donauschlinge nature trail is very challenging and can only be walked in sturdy footwear. It is not suitable for strollers or bicycles. Compared with the Waterfall Loop, the focus here is not only on the level of difficulty but also on clear requirements regarding footwear and permitted use. Check local trail conditions before setting out on either route.

The Danube–Ameisberg Loop offers a different perspective: it is a cycling route through the Hofkirchen i. M. area. If you are planning your stay around activities, you can consider it as a cycling option separate from the challenging hiking trails.

Cultural history with specific dates

Marsbach Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1075 under the name “Morspah” and is considered the oldest noble residence in the upper Mühlviertel. The year 1075 marks its first written mention, not the year it was built. The parish church of Hofkirchen i. M. has a different historical timeline: it was built between 1716 and 1739 and solemnly consecrated on June 28, 1739. Here, the construction period and consecration date are clearly distinct.

The Mesnerhaus dates from the 16th century and was placed under heritage protection in 2008. These two dates mark different aspects of its history: when the building was constructed and when it was later protected. The Falkenstein castle ruins, with their water tower, are also among the Mühlviertel’s most historically significant cultural landmarks.

These sites offer different historical perspectives: the first documented mention of Marsbach Castle, the construction and consecration dates of the parish church, and the age and heritage protection of the Mesnerhaus. The Falkenstein castle ruins add another cultural landmark whose significance extends across the Mühlviertel.

Another discovery near the town center

The Begegnung plant labyrinth offers a different focus. It is a four-circuit plant labyrinth near the town center, by the “Alte Bassena.” Alongside the hiking trails and historic cultural landmarks, it adds a distinctive destination connected to the town center.

When choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Hofkirchen, it helps to weigh your priorities: will challenging hiking trails define your stay, or are cultural history and the plant labyrinth more important? This makes it easier to decide what to focus on without combining the different trails and sights into a single outing.
