Explore Afiesl through a range of activities: the S9 cycling circuit winds through hills and forest landscapes, while border trails and cross-country ski routes offer different kinds of routes. There are also distinctive architectural landmarks and named cultural sites. For planning, a simple comparison helps: are you looking for a cycling tour, a winter activity, or individual places with a historical or cultural connection?

Cycling: a circuit and a named route

The S9 Afiesl Circuit is a cycling tour through the hills and forest landscapes around Afiesl. The S21 Green Belt Tour starts at Hotel Bergergut in Afiesl and runs via Unterafiesl and Köckendorf to the national border. This gives you two useful points of comparison: the S9 is identified as a circuit, while the S21 is described by its route from the starting point through two places to the border. Check the trail conditions for the S9 before setting off.

Winter between the border trail and the ski trail

The S1 Border Trail runs along the border of the former Iron Curtain. In winter, it can also be hiked with snowshoes, combining its connection to the border with a specific seasonal activity.

The two cross-country ski trails are also easy to distinguish: the Panorama Trail is 9 kilometres long and designed for classic skiing, while the Skating Trail is a 10-kilometre skating route. With just one kilometre between them, their lengths are comparable; the main difference to consider when choosing is classic style versus skating. Both trails operate seasonally and depend on snow conditions. When planning a winter visit, the snow conditions matter alongside your preferred technique.

Cultural sites and architectural history

In the Pürwald forest there is a stone formation resembling a reclining chair, known as the Devil’s Seat. The late Baroque Salmesmühle mill in Afiesl dates from around 1770. The former forester’s lodge of Helfenberg Castle in Afiesl dates from the 18th century. With its chair-like shape, the Devil’s Seat offers a different point of interest from the two historic buildings, the Salmesmühle and the forester’s lodge.

A gable chapel near Neuschlag dates from 1872. Afiesl is also home to a Passion cross from the 19th century. The Wendenstein has a different cultural significance: in St. Stefan, it is regarded and valued as a “landscape temple” and considered a place of spiritual energy.

Maria Rast lies on the Weberland circular trail and is a junction for several hiking trails. The Maria Rast spring and its spring house are within the municipality of Afiesl; the chapel belongs to the municipality of Schönegg. For hikes, check the local trail signs before setting off.
