Helfenberg combines hiking and route planning with specific cultural attractions. Two hiking trails provide details on both the route and the approximate walking time; several routes start or finish at the village square. There is also the history of the parish church, Piberstein Castle and a summer theatre programme. Those looking for a destination with hiking and cultural attractions will find a range of options to help plan their trip.
Hiking with clear time estimates
The 14 km 3-Theme Hiking Trail starts and ends at Helfenberg village square; the walking time is about 4¼ hours. Seasonal trail conditions can vary, so plan your hike according to the time of year. The Castle Trail is 6.2 km long and takes about 1.5 hours on foot. It starts at the century loom in the village square and leads uphill to Piberstein Castle, built around 1200. This gives you a choice between a walk of approximately one and a half hours and one of around 4¼ hours. These estimates can help you plan your hike to fit the time you have available.
At 58 km, the Kraft-Quelle-Baum Circular Trail covers a different distance. This circular hiking trail focuses on tree healing. If you would rather cycle than walk, the Witiko Cycle Route is a 48 km cross-border cycling tour. The starting point and destination for this tour are also at Helfenberg village square.
Cycling and multi-day tours
The Granitpilgerweg runs for over 90 km through the southeastern part of Rohrbach District. It connects ten municipalities from St. Martin to Helfenberg and is laid out in three to four daily stages. This makes it an option for a multi-day hiking trip. By comparison, the shorter hiking trails with walking-time estimates can be chosen to fit into a single time slot; the stages set the schedule for the Granitpilgerweg.
Church, castle and local history
The parish church is in the village centre, on the banks of the Steinerne Mühl. Its construction history can be traced through specific dates: work began in 1712; by the summer of 1717, the new church had been fully furnished with renovated altars and a new organ. Four statues of the Latin Church Fathers date from 1714. They were supplied by Philipp Rambler of Freistadt. The construction work, furnishings and artworks thus represent different stages in the church’s history.
Other attractions in Helfenberg include Piberstein Castle, Revertera Castle and the Maria Rast forest chapel. The castle is also the destination of the Castle Trail. For cultural sightseeing, the parish church offers a specific historical focus; Piberstein Castle, Revertera Castle and the Maria Rast forest chapel are additional attractions.
Summer programme and Böhmerwald snack platter
The Kulturfabrik presents theatre highlights every year during the summer months. If you would like to plan your visit around the programme, check the specific event dates in advance. A guided tour is offered at the Haudum bacon workshop, where you can also buy a Böhmerwald snack platter to take away. Confirm its availability before your trip if you plan to buy one.
