The Stoanaweg trail passes mystical granite formations and ends back in Kollerschlag; the Lourdes Chapel, right on the route, offers a chance to pause for a moment. Other highlights include a literary tribute to Norbert Hanrieder, an altarpiece from 1746 and a guided Erlebnis Tour. In Kollerschlag, you can choose between different points of interest, including the landscape, art and local history.
Granite Landscape and Trails
The Stoanaweg trail near Kollerschlag winds through the gently rolling landscape of the Mühlviertel, passing numerous mystical granite formations before ending back at its starting point in Kollerschlag. The Lourdes Chapel lies directly on the Stoanaweg and offers a place to pause for a moment. It has 110 seats and two bells, and is also known as the “Wangafritzn Chapel.”
The Pfaffenhaus also links a striking natural formation with a historical event. The 20 m-high rock formation has a large natural cave that served as a refuge for clergy fleeing the Hussites around 1427. Hochstein is 860 m high and is also known locally as “Burgstall.”
Literature, Art and Local History
The Hanriederweg is dedicated to Norbert Hanrieder, a dialect poet from the Mühlviertel. Hanrieder was born in Kollerschlag on 2 June 1842 and was one of Upper Austria’s most prominent dialect poets of the 19th century. The difference in theme is clear: the Stoanaweg focuses on granite formations and the Mühlviertel landscape, while the Hanriederweg offers a literary focus.
Another cultural highlight can be found in St. Joseph’s Parish Church: the high altar features Bartolomeo Altomonte’s altarpiece “The Death of St. Joseph,” dating from 1746. This work adds a tangible piece of art to the area’s literary history. If you would like to explore local history further, the Kollerschlag Topothek is an online archive about the history of Kollerschlag; its content can continue to grow.
