Green spaces and city history
Valladolid lies in the center of Castilla y León, on the River Pisuerga. Campo Grande is the city’s most historically significant central green space; in the past it was also known as Campo de la Verdad, Campo de Marte and Campo de la Feria. This green space offers a different perspective on Valladolid from its literary sites, churches and collections, which form the city’s cultural backdrop.
Literary traces and special visits
Valladolid offers several literary perspectives, each with a different basis. Miguel de Cervantes lived at the Cervantes House and Museum from 1601 to 1606, while the court of Felipe III was in Valladolid; he wrote several of his Novelas ejemplares there. The Cervantes House is the only Cervantes house still standing in Spain. The Ruta del Hereje, by contrast, leads to places that Miguel Delibes featured in his historical novel “El Hereje.” You can therefore encounter both a biographical place where Cervantes lived and wrote, and a literary route connected to a novel.
The Ruta arqueolĂłgica offers a different kind of visit: it provides guided tours of places that are not normally open to the public. As the availability of these tours may change, it is best to check in advance. The three formats are clearly distinct: a historic place of life and work, a literary route, and guided access to places that are otherwise not open to the public.
Art and architecture on different scales
The Museo Nacional de Escultura contains more than 6,000 objects dating from the late Middle Ages to the 20th century. Its collection includes Spanish religious polychrome wood sculpture from the 15th to the 18th century. “Polychrome” means multicolored; here, the artistic treatment is combined with the material, wood, and a clearly defined period. A broad art-historical scope and a specific collection focus thus sit side by side.
Architecture, too, can be viewed through different forms. Valladolid’s main square was the first geometrically regular square in Spain. The Iglesia de San Pablo has an imposing Isabelline Gothic façade, known as a “retablo en piedra” (“stone altarpiece”). The tower of the Iglesia de San MartĂn, by contrast, illustrates the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. At San Pablo, the focus is on the façade and its distinctive name; at San MartĂn, it is on a change of style visible in the tower.
Film, contemporary art and collections from different regions
The Contemporary Art Museum provides a comprehensive overview of Spanish art and its development from 1918 to the present day. It also hosts temporary exhibitions that focus mainly on new artistic proposals; the exhibition program may change. Here, you can distinguish between the broad overview across time and changing presentations focused on new approaches.
Film has its own cultural point of reference in Espacio Seminci: this permanent center is dedicated to film culture and documenting the Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid (Seminci). A different collection perspective is offered by the UVa’s Museo de Arte Africano Arellano Alonso. It permanently displays art from sub-Saharan Africa, including traditional coins, figurative terracotta sculptures and objects from the Kingdom of Oku in Cameroon. Film culture, Spanish contemporary art and art from sub-Saharan Africa each bring their own thematic focus.
A culinary point of reference
Alquimia, in Valladolid’s historic center, is known for creative haute cuisine shaped by a diverse blend of culinary cultures. As restaurant offerings may change, check what is currently available before planning a visit. This specific restaurant offers a culinary point of reference to complement the city’s cultural themes, without representing Valladolid’s entire dining scene.
