Discover Mota Del Marqués through its distinctive architectural features: a columned church hall with a Plateresque portal, a two-storey palace courtyard, religious art and a castle in a state of ruin. Its festive traditions also offer a reason to plan a trip. If you want to experience both, consider the architectural history and seasonal dates separately: a historic building is not necessarily open to visitors, and the exact festival programme may vary.

Churches, Palaces and Historic Details

The Iglesia de San Martín is a columned church hall typical of the 16th century, with a single-nave hall layout. Its south façade features a Plateresque portal. The church also contains a stone pulpit from the 16th century, considered one of the temple’s finest works, and the Virgen de las Angustias. The venerated sculpture was created around 1596 by the Palencia-born sculptor Adrián Álvarez. Since 1989, the Iglesia de San Martín has been closed for worship due to structural deterioration and the dangers posed by cracks and falling masonry. Check current access arrangements locally before visiting.

The Iglesia de El Salvador dates from the 16th century and underwent extensive alterations in the 17th century. Its consolidated ruins stand on the slope between the Castillo and the town of Mota Del Marqués. The ruinous state of the building makes its architectural development a different subject from the furnishings of the Iglesia de San Martín: here, the focus is on alterations and the surviving masonry.

At the Palacio de los Ulloa, the courtyard architecture is worth a closer look. The 16th-century building has a two-storey interior courtyard, with segmental arches resting on columns. Two paintings depict women in 16th-century dress and are attributed to the circle of Pantoja de la Cruz. A room in the Palacio del Marqués de Ulloa features trompe-l’œil paintings and landscapes from the Neoclassical period. These details range from the layout of a courtyard to illusionistic wall painting.

The two hermitages also offer their own art-historical points of interest. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Castellanos is an early 16th-century Gothic-Mudéjar building. Its main altar dates from around 1600 and is dominated by a dressed statue of the Virgin from the 18th century, the town’s patron saint. The Ermita del Cristo del Humilladero was built in 1526 from dressed stone on behalf of the Brotherhood of Veracruz. A 16th-century stone cross stands in front of its entrance.

The surviving keep of the Castillo de Mota del Marqués is described as the only round tower in all of Castile; the Castillo is in a state of ruin. In the surrounding area, parts of the foundations of the former wall, divided by towers, are visible. These surviving remains add traces of the former fortifications to the view of the castle.

Plan Festivals and Guided Tours

The patron saint festivities in Mota Del Marqués take place around 8 September in honour of Nuestra Señora de Castellanos. The programme may vary from year to year; confirm the current dates before travelling. Festivities in Mota Del Marqués include dancing, bullfighting events and encierros across the countryside and through the town’s streets.

Semana Santa is another specific occasion to visit: during the Good Friday procession, the traditional Venias take place in the Plaza Mayor. The Carnival custom known as “corrido el bollo” involves going from house to house to sample homemade sweets and drink the coffee liqueur typical of Mota Del Marqués. These traditions take place at different times of year; if you want to plan your trip around one of them, check that year’s programme.
