Pozaldez combines a strong connection to wine with religious buildings from different periods. It also has a patron saint’s festival and other cultural associations. This gives you several points to consider when planning your trip: wine culture, architectural history, events and cycling. You can choose which aspects matter most to you without reducing the town to just one theme.
Wine Landscape and Verdejo
More than 100 underground wine cellars run through Pozaldez and extend across almost half of the municipality. Verdejo adds another dimension to this connection with wine: it is made from the local grape variety of the same name. This brings together a widespread network of cellars and a specific local connection to wine and grape growing.
Churches and Religious Architecture
Pozaldez lies within the Ruta del Mudéjar. One of the town’s architectural landmarks is the Iglesia de San Boal, which preserves a large part of a Mudéjar building from the second half of the 13th century. The apse, the semicircular end of the church, is decorated with double blind arches and a frieze of corner bricks. The church also has a Rococo organ from the 18th century. Its slender tower has a bell chamber accessible by stairs. San Boal therefore offers a chance to compare medieval building fabric with an 18th-century organ in a single building.
The Iglesia de Santa María provides a later architectural contrast. It is a brick church from the late 16th century, with its tower at the west end and notable stucco work inside. It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. Its formal designation dates to 26 December 1997. The churches therefore offer a clear contrast in period: San Boal preserves 13th-century Mudéjar fabric, while Santa María dates from the late 16th century.
The Ermita de la Virgen de los Remedios offers a different perspective: its architecture is traditional and vernacular, and it houses an 18th-century statue of the Virgin Mary to whom it is dedicated. Unlike the churches’ specific Mudéjar features and stucco work, here the architecture is paired with a Marian statue as a distinct cultural theme.
Festival Dates and Other Interests
Pozaldez celebrates its patron saint San Boal on 20 May with a procession, dancing, open-air events and traditional games. The specific date can help you choose when to travel; check the event dates for your chosen year before your trip. In August, the historical reenactment “El caño se viste de época” is also associated with the Verano Cultural in Pozaldez. May and August therefore offer different dates to consider if you would like to plan your trip around a cultural event.
Cycling is also one of the activities visitors can enjoy in Pozaldez. It adds an active dimension to travel interests such as wine and architectural history. When planning, you can weigh these themes according to your interests rather than focusing your stay on a single cultural event.
