Villamarciel combines the Duero-shaped floodplain landscape with the history of a parish church whose construction and furnishings span several centuries. The town lies between several floodplains formed by the Duero, including the Vega de Aniago and the Vega de Villamarciel, and on Stage 15 of the Camino Natural del Duero. There are also two patron saint festivals with specific dates on the calendar. When planning a stay, you can weigh up the riverside route, church art and festival dates.

Duero floodplains and the Camino Natural del Duero

The Vega de Aniago and the Vega de Villamarciel are among the floodplains formed by the Duero; Villamarciel lies between several such floodplains. The town is also on Stage 15 of the Camino Natural del Duero. The Tordesillas–Villamarciel section runs along the right bank of the Duero. The route leads to a landing stage for fishing and canoeing, then continues upstream towards Villamarciel. The floodplains provide the town’s landscape setting; the right bank and the route running upstream help you orient yourself on this stage.

Church history across several centuries

The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves was originally built in the 14th century. Only the tower of this earlier church remains; the present building dates from the 20th century. The medieval date therefore refers to the original church, while the 20th century is when the present building was constructed.

The presbytery of the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de las Nieves contains a 16th-century Cristo. There is also a Retablo de Santa Margarita de Escocia from the 17th century, with a 19th-century painting. The presbytery is the area around the altar; a retablo is an altarpiece. This helps identify the location of the Cristo and the type of the other work of art. The dates also reveal two historical layers in the church’s furnishings: the retablo and the later painting.

Patron saint festivals throughout the year

Annual festivities in honour of San Felipe and Santiago take place from 1 to 3 May. The patron saint festival of Nuestra Señora Virgen de las Nieves is celebrated every year on 5 August. The calendar therefore includes a multi-day period in May and a single date in August. The exact programmes may vary. If you are planning a trip specifically for a festival, use the relevant date as a guide and check the programme for that year’s event.

Practical information and your stay

Restaurante Ruta 62 serves breakfast, tapas, portions and combination dishes; the food on offer may change. The CRED EL CARRO petrol station in Villamarciel has a rest area; service information may change.

When looking for a place to stay, you can start by considering the purpose of your trip: the festival dates give you a specific travel period, while the stage and church history offer different areas of interest. If you are looking for hotels in Villamarciel, this is a useful first step in planning your trip.
