Mojados lies on the banks of the Cega, a tributary of the Duero. The town can be explored from two different perspectives: through its churches, palaces and the history associated with Charles V, or through its river landscape and a circular walking route. This lets you decide whether to focus your trip planning on architectural history or the natural environment, rather than combining both themes into a single sightseeing itinerary.
Mudéjar architecture and building history
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is one of the most important examples of regional Mudéjar architecture. Its construction began towards the end of the 13th century and continued into the 14th century. The Iglesia de Santa María is also a Mudéjar building dating from the 14th century; later alterations were completed in the mid-15th century. The two churches thus share an architectural classification, but represent different stages in their building history.
Santa María houses an altarpiece and religious artworks, including a Christ by the sculptor Juan de Juni. The Casa-Palacio Conde de la Patilla, built at the end of the 15th century, also stands in Plaza de Santa María. The Palacio Viejo del Postigo also dates from the 15th century and once formed a single complex with the Casa-Palacio. The palaces add another historic building type to the picture alongside the churches.
The Puente Viejo marks a different period: it was built in 1575 on the orders of Felipe II and designed by Juan de Nantes. The Santuario Nuestra Sra. de Luguillas is a Baroque building from the 17th century. Its features include the bell gable and the frescoes in the Camarín. The Ermita Santo Cristo del Humilladero also dates from the 17th century; it was built of stone and brick, and crosses on its exterior form the Stations of the Cross.
The heritage of Charles V
The Museo Carlos V is the first museum in Spain devoted exclusively to Charles V. Interactive educational activities teach visitors about his legacy and territories, as well as the design of his coat of arms and his ancestors. Alongside its architecture, Mojados thus offers a dedicated subject area that explores the ruler’s history from several perspectives.
A historical reenactment is also associated with Charles V: since 2007, the Ayuntamiento de Mojados has organized a reenactment and dramatization of his visit to and stay in Mojados in 1517. The town is also part of the “Itinerario Cultural Europeo de la Ruta del Emperador Carlos V.” The museum, historical event and cultural route each highlight different aspects; they should not be taken as a guarantee of specific event dates.
Along the Cega: circular trail and natural environment
The PRC-VA 30 Senda del Cega is a 10.5-kilometer circular walking route. It starts and ends near the Puente Viejo and Fuente del Caño in Mojados. Its length gives you a clear guide for planning your day; also check the trail conditions before setting out. The route runs through the Cega valley, between dryland and irrigated farmland. The valley is flanked by the elevated limestone plateaus.
The river landscape along the route includes a relatively well-preserved ecosystem of high ecological value, which has been included in the Natura 2000 network. Visitors interested in landscape and nature will find a different focus here from the town’s buildings: the emphasis is on the river valley and the different types of agricultural land. The Albosancho y Cobatilla municipal pine forest adds another historic dimension to the landscape, as it was established in the Middle Ages.
El Chorrero is also a point of interest in the town center: it is one of Mojados’s parks and gardens. The Santuario Nuestra Sra. de Luguillas, in turn, combines a religious landmark with a location on the banks of the Cega and surrounded by nature. These natural settings can be distinguished by their individual character—from a park in the town center and the medieval municipal pine forest to the river valley along the Senda del Cega.
