Medina De Rioseco brings together religious art and the industrial heritage of the Canal de Castilla. Its historic center, with Rúa Mayor and the surviving gates of the old city walls, is an outstanding example of Tierra de Campos architecture. The canal port is another part of the town’s history. Medina De Rioseco is designated a Historic-Artistic Site.

Churches, Townscape and Cultural Heritage

The Church of Santa María de Mediavilla is an Isabelline Gothic building constructed between 1490 and 1516. The Church of Santiago houses a Baroque altarpiece by Joaquín de Churriguera. The Chapel of Benavente within the city walls has its own distinctive artistic history: its altarpiece by Juan de Juni is dedicated to La Inmaculada.

Holy Week also shapes the town’s cultural identity. The identity, traditions and rites of Holy Week in Medina De Rioseco are designated Intangible Cultural Heritage; the corresponding designation was approved in 2019. In addition, Holy Week is recognized as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. These two distinctions refer to different aspects: the cultural traditions and rites on the one hand, and recognition of the event on the other.

On the outskirts of town lies El Moclín, designated a Cultural Heritage Site in the category of Historic Site. On July 14, 1808, it was the scene of the first major battle that launched the Peninsular War against Napoleon. El Moclín is thus associated both with a permanent cultural heritage designation and with a precisely dated event in the town’s history.

The Canal de Castilla and Its Port

In Medina De Rioseco, the Campos branch of the Canal de Castilla ends at a large canal port. The port includes a dry dock, warehouses, houses, mills and grain mills. These facilities illustrate different aspects of the canal’s industrial heritage, from the mills to the buildings that form part of the port complex.

The former San Antonio grain mill, dating from the 19th century, retains all of its historic machinery. The Grain Mill Museum explains how historic grain mills work and how they are connected to the Canal de Castilla. This places the history of milling as a distinct part of the industrial heritage alongside the history of the canal port.

Visits and Planning Your Trip

The municipal tourist office, Oficina de Turismo, is in the historic center in the former Franciscan monastery, which now houses the San Francisco Museum. It provides information about routes through the historic center, along the Canal de Castilla and in the Tierra de Campos region. The office also organizes guided and dramatized tours. As the program may change, check the latest contact details and which tours are available before your trip.

Regular one-hour tourist boat trips depart from the canal port, running from Tuesday to Sunday. As schedules may change, check the latest timetable before your trip. Medina De Rioseco is also a stop on the Camino de Santiago de Madrid.

In the surrounding area, pilgrimages to the Ermita de Castilviejo take place every year on September 8 and the following Sunday. Alongside the townscape, churches and canal port, these recurring religious traditions in the surrounding area offer another distinct aspect of your stay.
