Tordesillas’s cultural history spans the Mudéjar heritage of the Real Monasterio de Santa Clara and the treaty history of the Casas del Tratado. Crafts, a local wine tradition and the Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero wetland offer further topics to explore. During your stay, you can focus on architecture and history or broaden your perspective to include food and nature.

Monastery architecture and treaty history

The Real Monasterio de Santa Clara is one of the finest examples of Mudéjar art in Castile and León. A Gothic church was added to the Mudéjar palace in the 15th and early 16th centuries. The monastery also preserves Arab baths, among the best-preserved of their kind. Visitors can see the Mudéjar chapel, the Arab patio, the Golden Chapel, the refectory, the Patio El Vergel, the church and the Capilla de los Saldaña. The combination of the palace and the church added later brings different phases of construction to life; the preserved baths offer another distinctive feature.

The Casas del Tratado consist of two interconnected palaces. Negotiations between Castile and Portugal over the Treaty of Tordesillas concluded there with its signing on 7 June 1494. The Museo del Tratado is also located in the Casas. Its two rooms cover historical, geographical, political and social aspects of the period. This places the specific event, its date and the parties involved alongside a broader overview of the era.

Museums, art and local traditions

The Museo y Centro Didáctico del Encaje de Castilla y León displays lace, embroidery, clothing, liturgical items, ritual cloths and household objects. The collection therefore ranges from textiles and clothing to objects for religious and domestic use.

A museum in Tordesillas preserves a Cristo Yacente from the school of Gregorio Fernández, an Immaculada by Pedro de Mena, an altarpiece with sculptures by Juan de Juni, and an alabaster tomb created by Gaspar de Tordesillas in 1550. The Capilla de los Alderete also houses a 16th-century altarpiece with sculptures by Juan de Juni. The summer theatrical tours, “Historias y Leyendas de la Villa,” also explore local history; they have been held since 2001. Check the dates for your travel period if you would like to include this experience.

Bodega Subterránea Muelas offers tours of its underground wine cellar, including tastings of traditionally made wines. Another local tradition is the dish Gallo Turresilano, prepared in Tordesillas using an old recipe with roosters raised in local courtyards. This gives you two different culinary experiences during your stay: a tour with wine tasting and a dish rooted in a clearly identified local recipe tradition.

Wetland and activities on the water

The Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero Nature Reserve includes Tordesillas and forms a significant wetland. It provides breeding and wintering grounds for many different waterbirds. The seasonal timing differs from that of the theatrical tours, which take place in summer: the protected area is important to waterbirds both as a breeding ground and as a wintering habitat.

Fishing is possible along the entire riverbank in Tordesillas; a fishing permit from Castile and León is required. Check the current permit requirements before fishing. You can take a canoe onto the water from the “Árbol Caído” landing stage. Check the current requirements for the waterway before setting off.
