Megeces lies on the Cega. Long walks are possible along the riverbank and on the Páramo slopes beside the town centre; other highlights include the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol, a medieval bridge and local festivities. When planning your trip, you can weigh up time outdoors, architectural details and a stay around one of the listed festival dates.
Walks along the Cega and on the Páramo slopes
Long walks are possible along the banks of the Cega River in Megeces. Another option is the Páramo slopes beside the town centre, where long walks are also possible. When planning your day, you can decide whether you would rather spend your time by the river or on the slopes. Check the path conditions locally before planning your walk.
Church, altarpiece and medieval bridge
The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol in Megeces is a Romanesque-Mudéjar church. The municipal description dates it to the 12th century. Its bell gable is built of brick and consists of two sections. The church thus offers both its traditional stylistic classification and a specific architectural feature to appreciate.
A distinct art-historical detail is the “Retablo Lateral del Cristo Crucificado” in the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol. The side altarpiece is in the Neoclassical style and dates from the first third of the 17th century. It contains a depiction of Christ from the third quarter of the 16th century, to which its name refers. The depiction of Christ is therefore older than the altarpiece that contains it.
Megeces’s medieval bridge is another clearly described structure in the town: it has a single arch. Together with the church and the side altarpiece, it offers another architectural point of interest for a stay focused on different building styles and periods.
Festivities and a historical singing tradition
Las Candelas is celebrated in Megeces on 2 February with a popular character. Various events are organised on 25 July, the feast day of Santiago Apóstol. If you would like to plan your trip around either of these dates, check the local programme in advance. The two dates offer different times to visit and can help you choose when to travel.
The historical tradition of “Las Enramadas” belongs to a different period: these were round songs performed by young men for unmarried young women in the town. The tradition describes an earlier form of singing and its participants; it should be distinguished from celebrations associated with specific festival dates.
